Diskutil gives this warning when running "first aid": warning: crypto_val: object (oid 0x4): invalid state.major_version (0)

Strange that brand new computer gives warnings, should I be worried about this?

iMacPro, Mac OS 10.13.2

I received my first IMac Pro in December and found the 3 crypto_val warnings. I was only able to clear this by erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the OS. On the same computer, I also has finder issues. When creating a new folder, i would get an error code -43). Ultimately Apple issued a return.

Jump forward to today 010518, the new iMac Pro arrived. I ran Disk Utility and the 3 crypto_val warnings are on this unit as well. I will be again, erasing the drive and reinstalling the OS to try and resolve.

I just got an iMac Pro yesterday, base model. Same problem. Folders disappear. Mouse gets jumpy and keyboard gets "stuck". Having the same warning in Disk Utility. Not a good start. I really don't want to reinstall everything since I have to work with this machine. Is there a solution to this problem that doesn't require a clean install?

Thanks for your help.

I have the same issue but mine goes one step further...when that crypto warning shows up then everything just FREEZES and I have to restart my iMac Pro. NOT HAPPY and do NOT want to have to do a fresh reinstall of everything. I already did this TWICE in December with my order iMac and lost SO MUCH work time because of this 😟

Actually...I *really* hope that more of you will contact Apple Support and ask them about this. I thought about this further today and would like more input from other Apple Geniuses...but would prefer for it to be reported from others instead of myself so that they know SEVERAL users are experiencing this on their brand spanking new iMac Pros 🙂.

What concerned me was that the Apple Support Tech (a lady) whom I spoke with had NO IDEA what "Quick Look" was... she said to me that it was perhaps a third party application or some term that was quickly made up by users. She wouldn't quite believe me when I told her that it was an Apple feature and was specifically called "Quick Look".

The reason that I bring this up (Quick Look) is because it is the primary reason I used Disk Utility in the first place. I was getting some errors trying to quickly preview pdf documents in the Finder, using Quick Look (by pressing the space bar), and after doing some online research decided to run Disk Utility (first time I have run it on this Mac)...and that is how I came across the "Crypto" error. Thankfully after a restart I no longer have the preview error (altho' I have experienced it a couple of times in the last month).
ALSO, she did not know too much ABOUT the Quick Look feature at ALL. She also did not know that pressing the space bar brought up a preview.... she thought that it would just allow us to quickly change the file name (which is actually done by pressing the Return key).

She also told me that it is not necessary to go straight to Disk Utility every time we are having a problem and that Disk Utility will not fix applications. I think she was misunderstanding me when I mentioned Quick Look (that it was the primary reason I ended up using Disk Utility... because users who experienced similar problems recommended doing this after speaking with Apple tech support). I told her that I was concerned there was an issue with my HARD DRIVE and NOT an application. But still... she kept thinking that Quick Look was a third party application and that it was the primary reason I was calling in because I was trying to "fix it" when in fact I was calling in about the Disk Utility/Hard Drive error...

Hmmm....

Ok so, here are my problems, and ill try and be brief.

1) Warnings are never ok - it's a warning - and for apple to suggest 'its not a problem' is BS.

2) When i enable filevault or disable it, it's instant, no progress bar. This isnt the case on any other apple devices, even those using 10.13 & APFS. this COULD be a iMacPro thing - but it would be nice to know this. Why is this important ? is filevault even on ? it says its on, but if there is no encryption time for a HD with data on it - is it REALLY encrypted ?

3) When filevault is on ... the login screen is REALLY laggy ... stuttering mouse, missed keys - makes typing a password REALLY hard (the KB part is ok when wired, really bad when using BT).

4) then the whole 'missing files' thing in finder.. which is fixed via a finder restart/reboot - ive never had that on other apple devices with the same OS.

I wonder if they're related...i may be trying a SSD erase soon - becaus ei know this will eat away at me until i fix it.

My Quick Look issues have been mostly when wanting to preview iCloud Documents that were not downloaded to my computer.

I also use the Smart Sync option in my Dropbox- it also offers a "placeholder" for my files and allows me to download them if I need them rather than having 3TB of files on my 1TB SSD. ::grin:: These Dropbox files also don't work as expected with Quick Look.

One thing I've noticed about Apple Tech support is that I've been using the Mac system for longer than some of these people have been alive. 😮 I recently showed a Genius how to close all the Finder windows by option clicking the red button on a window. He was awesome nevertheless, and hopefully I'll soon have my broken MBP back and functioning. While sometimes frustrating, I do know they have the documents with the suggested workflows for troubleshooting and can get things replaced/repaired that I don't have authorization to accomplish by myself. ::grin:: And sometimes I hang up and call back to get someone else on the line when I know I need more than they can offer.

Warm regards.

I have the same problem here with my new iMac Pro, but a little bit different. I'm also getting the 3 warnings when running Disk Utility. But sometimes my trackpad is freezing. Switching it off and on doesn't help most of the times but sometimes. Usually after some seconds my iMac Pro powers down by itself.

Sometimes I'm receiving a message that dash board is frozen. From my feeling all the problems started when I used a widget (Sceenshot Plus), I used for many years on my old iMac. I've just deleted all widgets from the dashboard and we'll see what will happen.

I've paid a lot of money for this new iMac Pro because my old iMac had also a strange behaviour and even when Apple changed more or less everything of it (except the stand, the CPU and the fans) the problem wasn't fixed. And now I'm starting with problems on my iMac Pro? What a b....t!

Feb 19, 2018 2:32 AM in response to Peter Lemon

Need to do some update on this matter: After my previous message and a couple of restarts my iMac Pro froze totally. It just didn't start anymore with or without safe mode or any other procedure. When using Disk Utility I noticed my main partition, where the MacOS is installed was using a new filesystem and it was crypted. None of the tips at web support helped me so I contacted Apple Care.

With the support person we tried the same procedures I did already and after that he told me as a last option I should format my main drive, reinstall the MacOS and migrate all my data manually - so I did. I chose to use unencrypted filesystem.

A few days ago they called me from Apple to ask some questions and get a log file so they can investigate the problem. After all this it didn't come clear to me what the problem was. It may have been the cryption and formation of the drive, a bad data migration from my previous iMac or a bad device or driver when doing my first installation or something else.

Never the less after the reinstallation and manual data migration my iMac Pro is now working like a charm! And there is no Crypto_val error anymore.

Feb 19, 2018 6:26 PM in response to spertti

In case this helps someone else... I was also able to get the crypto_val warning to vanish by: booting into recovery mode (cmd-R at startup); running Disk Utility from there; erasing the startup SSD; re-installing High Sierra (from recovery mode); then restoring my data from a Time Machine backup. After all this completed I: booted back to recovery mode; ran Disk Utility; then repaired the startup SSD; and there were no more crypto_val warnings.

Feb 20, 2018 6:32 AM in response to CleefMon

Having the same issue and did what you did with Recovery Mode, killing Mac HD, then creating new Volume and reinstalling MacOS. Fixed the crypto_val errors, however the Finder errors (missing files, folders looking like paper sheets, error 43) all remained.

So I tried making a macOS flash drive, every time I attempt to run it, the computer tells me i need a software update to use that Startup disk. Secure Boot is off, and I run that update, no dice. So instead...

In the process of doing an Internet Recovery and I’m going to wipe SSD clean, start a new Container/Volume altogether and see if that helps.

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one having issues with the new iMac Pro, but this *****. By the way my NEW iMac Pro was dented right out of the box too - so either way this thing is going back, but I’m trying to troubleshoot abuse solutions on this unit before attempting to get a new one. If a new, new iMac Pro reports the same problems I think I’mma have to hang up the towel on this one and skip this gen. Shame - that space gray is stunning.

I'll try to fix that on Tuesday. Here's my guess:

Due to the fact some are installing the OS new, but some are restoring macOS from TimeMachine, I think, it's an partion error. For sure Apple isn't installing macOS on each device they're delivering, I think they're using a master which is cloned to every iMac Pro. And this master is faulty...

It's a shame for Apple that during the last months they're only delivering crap. On macOS they just stopped to number every update to hide this a little bit.

Steven would be very frustrated knowing that. But it seems Tim Cook is looking on the shares only!

I'll keep you informed about my experiences...

Greetings from Germany!

Feb 21, 2018 8:33 AM in response to th10gt

I tried today to boot my iMac Pro from an USB stick with High Sierra. I have exactly the same problem as chrisgavr asked all the time for a software update than my iMac Pro powers down and if I try again to boot from the USB stick, I'm forced to perform a software update.

Fortunately I don't have all the Finder problems...

Feb 21, 2018 8:44 PM in response to th10gt

Success!!!
Due to the fact I wasn't able to boot my iMacPro from an USB stick, I've booted from a recovery partion (by pressing OPTION+COMMAND+P+R (wich usually should reset NVRAM, but on an iMac Pro...). I'm wondering why my internal hard disk was split to 4 volumes, but I didn't care about. I've deleted the volume (partition) Macintosh HD and installed a clean High Sierra.

After that I restored all data from my Time Machine backup. (You should have a full Time Machine backup of your Macintosh HD!) Launching First Aid on Macintosh HD all crypto_val errors are gone. I've checked for updates in App Store and there was again a supplementary 10.13.3 update. It took roughly 20 minutes (and 4 reboots) to install. The crypto_val errors are still gone.

I need to rearrange all my apps in Launchpad and now I'm nosy to discover if all problems are gone. My feeling was, I had some with Dashboard and especially with the widget Screenshot Plus. Next step will be to reinstall all widgets.

If I'll run in trouble again, I'll report here. If not, this post will be the last one on this topic.

Good luck to all of you fighting with crypro_val errors!

Feb 21, 2018 9:01 PM in response to th10gt

Update on "Success"...

After reinstalling my widgets to Dashboard I received the notice that Dashboard freezed. After that my trackpad wasn't working and my iMac powered off. Does that mean I was exactly at that point where my trouble started? No! The crypto_val errors are still gone and after deleting all widgets from Dashboard, my iMac Pro is running fine.

I hope this will become a stable status.

Feb 23, 2018 2:21 PM in response to AngelaLinCA

I'm having a problem also. It seems to be common on the IMac Pro. Apple says that is a known. Hopefully decide to fix it sooner than later.

Additional problems on the IMac Pro. 18 core 128 mb 2Tb drive 16Gb video

1) letting IMac Pro go to sleep for the night and rebooting. Opening a folder and all the files do not show up. Opening external drive, files don't show.. Reboot, files show up

2) Wired mouse becomes inactive is not used for about 10 minutes, have to unplug and re-plug to get cursor to move. Even though mouse light is still on.

3) Temperature ... Appears that Apple opted for silence over efficient cooling on the IMac Pro. It will often get to 90 C before it seems to want to cool itself with doing very little. For example a just running an anti-virus app that uses all cores will take it up to 90 C very fast. Anything over 60 C is of concern to me. Apple should be giving us an option to adjust fan cooling curves .... and it's not even summer yet.
