Audio interfaces stopped working with OS-X update 10.13.2

I updated my operating system High Sierra, OS-X today with 10.13.2 and now my audio interfaces are not recognizable. I.e. if I plug an audio interface into the USB port, the device would show in the list of input and output sound devices. They now do not. One of them was an M-Audio Fast Track Pro, so I found the latest drivers, installed them and also updated the firmware on the device. It still could not be recognized.

I have an Eleven Rack that has a USB interface for use with Apple's Logic software. I worked before I upgraded to 10.13.2.

Any thoughts or answers? This shuts down my recording. I'm dead in the water here now.

Thanks in advance of any replies,

David

I have the same issue with my Focusrite 2i2 (2nd Generation) I contacted their tech. support. I am afraid this solution did not work for me but it may work for others on this thread so I wanted to share just in case. I am still waiting to here back from them. If they respond with a solution, I will let you know.

"Thanks for getting in touch. I am sorry to hear you are experiencing this issue.

In some instances, the audio preference files on your Mac may have become corrupted, which may be causing this issue.

Can you please navigate to Mac HD > Library > Preferences > Audio and please delete the two preference files in there by either dragging them to the trash bin or right-click - Move to Trash. If there are four files then two of these are likely duplicates, delete these as well.

Next, go to Finder > click 'Go' on the top taskbar of the screen > Hold down the "Alt" key and click on the Library folder > Preferences. In there please trash the file "com.apple.audiomidisetup.plist". After doing this please empty the trash, then restart your system.

Best regards,

Focusrite Technical Support"

UPDATE for Focusrite Interfaces

The email I listed above was missing one step, the last one that is seen in the video.

https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849239-How-do-I-Delete-my-Aud io-Preferences-on-Mac-OS-X-

There is one more file to delete in your Systems > Extensions folder.

I added that step to the first two listed in the email, empty my trash and restarted. It appears to have worked.

I am hopeful this will work for you too.

Nightmare, this kind of thing is ongoing. Sorry to hear it dlwhitehurst.

Eventually, when you do get everything sorted and stable, either by installing Sierra instead of High Sierra, and maybe rolling back to your earlier Logic version, then just stick with that system, stability is paramount.

Make sure you turn off automatic updates too.

You may miss out on some new features, but who cares, better than being dead in the water as you say.

I only recently stopped updating, On El Capitan 10.11.3 with Logic 10.3.2 here, all stable and hunky dory.

Good luck with everything, it is possible to install Sierra, people have left links on this forum.

David,

In House means within Apple. I purchased Logic at 2.xx when it was a cross platform MIDI only application, the company was eMagic. Apple purchased Logic/eMagic when Logic was at version 5.xx, the last cross platform version was 5.5. Apple has always pushed for everything to be within the company. Apple wanted Logic's Audio/Virtual Instrument technology for Garageband and Final Cut pro. They have been more and more lax regarding third party support. Pro and semi-pro DAW users are less than a drop in the bucket.

Generally speaking, USB is crap for audio, USB Audio/MIDI interfaces will work fine one release of the operating system and not work at all the next then come alive again after a few incremental OS updates. There's many on this board who will corroborate the pitfalls of running USB audio/MIDI the past few OS/Logic releases. I know third part developers that are finding it more and more difficult to get support from Apple in terms of pre-release betas. Usually the wait to release drivers until after a few incremental updates, which could take months.

Several here (myself included) use older Mac Pros running Logic 9.1.8 and Snow Leoperd, because they operate like a professional recording/playback system. I have a 16-track audio system (Firewire) that is far, far more stablethan any of the new machines running the latest Logic.

As I said, Apple would rather it's users stay within the company, it always been Apple's way, nothing new.

Last, welcome to the Logic beta-test team.

I have multiple hundred/thousand dollar units that depend on MIDI external to the computer. They have broken the majority of them (a few class compliant items still work; driver-assisted MIDI does not).

Same here, don't have as much external gear as I used to but still have a full 4ft rack filled with synths and effects, that's why I stick with an older setup that just works. Had to jump off Apple's upgrade gravy train.

Plus I have a 4 proc UAD PCie DSP card in the machine and a nice suite of effects.

If I'm not being overly blunt here, Apple has ROYALLY SCREWED THE POOCH where MIDI under Logic is concerned. Roll back if you can!

I have interfaces it recognizes, but they are not shown as 'online' in the Audio MIDI Setup Tool. My initial assessment of the problem:

  1. External MIDI is broken if your interface requires you to load a driver (unless it was specifically written very recently)
  2. Devices that are CLASS COMPLIANT (no driver required) are more successful, but not a guarantee.
  3. My external Mackie Logic Control no longer works, even after buying a new MIDI CLASS COMPLIANT interface (wicked FAIL)
  4. My Roland UM-880 (8x8 MIDI) no longer works
  5. My Roland UM-2 no longer works
  6. My two RME Fireface 800's no longer pass coherent MIDI

So in short, MIDI is mostly screwed. I am able to capture keystrokes from my Kurzweil PC3K7 and Akai MPK-261, but that's about it.

Thank you Apple for screwing up something that has been the original purpose for Logic (MIDI), and then for ruining it 30 years later. Nice quality control (not). As Bugs Bunny might say "what a bunch of Maroons".

This really needs to be escalated. I did my bit (calling Apple). You all need to as well - 1-800-MYA-PPLE.

Pancenter:

What doesn't make sense about your response is that while I love Logic and all the "in-house" things it can do, I got to get a signal "into-the-house" and that's through one of these 4 dinky, fragile, USB-C connectors. Here's my assessment:

1) When the USB's break, I'll need to give Apple another 3K for a new laptop

2) Keep upgrading my OS until I can't get a signal into my Logic software

3) What's up Apple?

I don't understand what they are doing. Ask the question on Google, "What's the best audio interface for Mac?" and you'll find all this mess about the use of Firewire (old outdated) and nothing professional with any features made by the Apple company. I still don't know what you mean about "in-house". I want to use Logic as a DAW and I don't want to use ProTools. And, I've paid for Logic 9 and 10 now. I just want to use my fantastic software.

Most importantly, I can't get my Mackie MCU to work, which is pretty much a deal breaker

Happy to chat with you. We have similar backgrounds, and I'm sure this will be a piece of cake. I'm not positive which versions of OS/Logic your on, but we'll get that sorted out quickly. As you might suspect, some of the latest versions of the OS AND/OR later versions of Logic are responsible for a minor shitstorm, and running down-level software is no crime.

I'll send you my contact info via private mail.
