I couldnt find and answer for this issue but, so i thought i might ask.
I cannot use facetime using my apple ID as it has only my phone number and bot the phone number and "use your apple ID for facetime" are greyed out.
I tried turning iMessages on and off and FaceTime as well on and off, restarting the device couldn't help either.
iPhone X, iOS 11.2.1
Try restarting the phone.
Try a forced restart.
Do you have access to another network where you can try?

Apple Support by e-mail or chat Select your device, Battery, Power and Charging, then Power adapter not working to get a chat option. If you need to talk to them, ask them if they will do a Skype or FaceTime with you.
Or fill out and submit this form.
On the device, if you go to Settings > FaceTime > see what is checked off under the You Can Be Reached By FaceTime At....
i have now my phone number checked at the "you can be reached at", but it is greyed out.
i have the "use your apple ID for FaceTime" but when i hit sign in, it tells me that it cannot reach the server,
tried the related article to it but no luck.
i actually can make facetime calles but only using the phone number, not the apple ID.
Hello, I have exactly same problem, did you find a solution so we can use Apple ID for FaceTime?
I have the same problem too, I guess it’s due to the geographical location? I mean maybe in some countries we can’t access the Apple ID for FaceTime..?
I having the same problem I don’t think it’s geographic I’m in Montreal Canada it was working fine I suddenly had this problem anyone found a solution?
Did all what was mentioned previously still same problem
