Male emoji shows up as 🤷🏾‍♂️ (female emoji w/ male symbol, i.e. ♂)? Why?

Every time I double click a male emoji symbol it shows up as the female version with the male symbol, i.e. 💁-1F3FE;♂, 🏾♂,🙅-1F3FE;♂.

For some reason the male facepalm emoji works, but still, why is the male symbol next to it? 🏾♂

Is this on purpose, or some kind of default setting?

Why do I get the feeling Apple has done something in the interest of progressiveness that ends up being massively annoying 🙄.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.
