Amazon winner pop ups on my iPhone

Eveytime I open my internet on my iPhone 6+ I get this amazon prize winner pop up. I have my phone set to block pop ups on internet, but they come through every single time. It’s annoying and there has to be a way to stop this. Everything was cleared & I made sure my pop up blocking was on. If anyone can help it would be great. Nothing like trying to look something up and having a pop up on your iPhone get in the way.

No one has figured out how to hijack your phone. Someone has hijacked a website you visited. Do the following:

  • Turn on Airplane Mode
  • Go to Settings/Safari and tap Clear History and Website Data
  • double-press the HOME button, find the Safari screen image and swipe it up to close the app
  • Restart your phone
  • Turn Airplane Mode off

This should clear the message. And don't go back to whatever website you were on the first time it happened.

This does not stop the pop ups, you say don’t visit these sites but this happens on all sites CNN, FOX,Bloomberg and even on my pintrest app. This happened on my iPhone 6s Plus and now on my iPhone 8 plus, I’ve reset phone from new and within a day or 2 same thing happens. This is as annoying as waiting for a page to download on dialup and the solution to that was not using the computer because of the aggravation. I’ve had androids and different carriers with the same problems do I don’t blame Apple but would hope they would lead with a solution.

Lawrence,

Thank you. I stupidly fell for the pop up. Your solution has solved the problem. The biggest difference with your instructions is turning on airplane mode first. Thank you so much!

I fell for it the first time, also. That's how I worked out how to fix it. Then I encountered it on weather.com! Shows that almost any site can be infected. And it took them 2 days to clean it up after I reported it to them.

Private browsing in iOS Safari does not prevent this. Clearing website data did nothing for me. Also, links from outside of Safari do not open in private tabs, there’s no setting to do such a thing, and as mentioned it would be tedious to the point that I’d switch to Android if I had to copy urls over to private windows.

Safari, both mobile and desktop, used to be premier browsers. Whoever took over those teams in the last few years have driven these browsers into the ground and resisted several pushes on new and better web standards. Even MS Edge is now a far superior browser to Safari on desktop. This is just another symptom of Safari’s slow journey into mediocrity.

Is this some kind of religious belief conflict?

Basically, it's the fanboi thing.

The wife and I started out with purchasing an IBM XT clone running DOS 3.1. I then built many of my own PCs over the years and switched to Macs when I started my own prepress business. That because almost that entire industry is built around Macs. Or at least, was. More shops are becoming Windows based doing the same work, but it's still heavily Mac dominated. It was very important at the time to be on Macs since Type 1 PostScript fonts were (and still aren't) transferable between Macs and PCs. You can purchase the supposedly exact same T1 PS font from Adobe, Linotype, etc. for each platform. But, even from the same vendor, type reflow isn't quite the same. So, you have to carry a project through from start to finish the way it was sent from the client. And that generally meant, Mac.

All of that boils down to, I have no real allegiance. I've used both platforms for many years, and am comfortable with either. I prefer Macs, but that doesn't mean I won't use Windows.

My other theory (notice it's almost always new users), is that they think they're making some sort of threat to Apple employees that they're going to leave and get the "enemy's" product. Well, everyone here (as I believe you already know) are other users. The person wants to ditch their Apple device? Go ahead. It's their money to spend as they wish. I have no incentive to try and talk them out of it. But the way they state their intentions leads you to think you'll lavish them with a gift or something to keep them in the fold.

I have a work iPhone 7, and an older personal iPhone 5 (I know, I know) and both are set to the tightest privacy and ad blocker status possible. Both have had history cleared several times, both rebooted many times, and both continue to pick up this pop up which I guess we can now call a virus. This was a proble in January, and it continues to be a problem in March. Apple? What is going on with your software?

I have an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 6s Plus. The ‘suspected’ site...if the Amazon ‘You’ve won’, VERY annoying webpage is coming from some other site, is visited on BOTH phones. I only have the issue on the iPhone 6...not the 6s plus. I’ve followed the suggested steps several times. And, yes, I am clearing the browser cache FIRST, each time. THE STEPS HAVE NOT WORKED. Also, I’ve checked with my niece and several other people who have iPhones also...from 7 to X. They visit the same site that I do. None of them are having this issue. From the discussion threads, I don’t see a specific site mentioned that could be the culprit. ALL of us can’t be visiting the same site. 😏 So, my questions: Could this be an iPhone 6 vulnerability? Is this a virus? Does Apple any updates, with a patch, to stop this? Does anyone have any idea of the ‘siteS’ that may be causing the issue? I am now experiencing this issue on just about ANY (not all) website I visit, whether I’m using Safari or Google. Talk about not being able to FINISH reading an article...I can barely get started, as the Amazon ‘You’ve Won’ ad appears within seconds of visiting a website. Any OTHER ideas. We need help with a permanent resolution. By the way, the first time, I went through everything, but, then stopped as the surveys never stopped. One time, I let the time expire. One time, I purposely answered all questions WRONG. I was never ‘disqualified’. Same thing keeps happening. HELP!!! 🙏-1F3FD;🙏-1F3FD;🙏-1F3FD;😏😏😏😢😢😢😡😡😡 Thanks!

I fully agree with Icascio, I have gone through all the steps outlined by Apple several times with absolutely no luck. This has to be a virus that has effected the iPhone....and now my iPad. this has rendered any search in Safari useless on both devices.

I have ave already learned that the Apple customer service folks are not allowed to monitor this site, therefore unless we contact Apple directly, there is no knowledge of our issues. I will be doing that today and follow up with what I learn.

Well, thank you for posting this Papjo. I am among the frustrated complainers about this Amazon ad. I thought that I had done everything i could to block the ads and was not aware top of the value of ad blockers. I imagine the same is true of many others. So , again, thank you for posting this so I could learn of this option. Anyone who is frustrated with us, please know that we are open to learning about options, which is how we end up on threads like this.

Friendly apparently with the paid version does have the option to block FB ads in your feed. I don’t think the FB app does nor does it allow the link to be opened in Safari which would allow any ad blockers you have to function. Obviously if you go to FB through Safari then that would come into play. Again I don’t use FB in anyway so I’m not sure how all this works.

The AdBlock Plus extension for Safari is still there you just have to enter a search for. It’s just not on the featured page. I had to do a search for the AdBlock version I use on macOS. It’s still there also. I think it’s by the same people that made the Adblock app I used to use on my phone, Futuremind.

Anyway the reviews I’m seeing for Friendly mention some of the concerns I have about the native FB app. My wife uses it extensively and I’d say many if not most of the device issues she’s experienced have come from that app. And looking at all the current news about FB, I would be concerned about having anything to do with them. Actually scratch, that I AM concerned!
