Amazon winner pop ups on my iPhone

Eveytime I open my internet on my iPhone 6+ I get this amazon prize winner pop up. I have my phone set to block pop ups on internet, but they come through every single time. It’s annoying and there has to be a way to stop this. Everything was cleared & I made sure my pop up blocking was on. If anyone can help it would be great. Nothing like trying to look something up and having a pop up on your iPhone get in the way.

I got on with apple support they had no information other than to restore as new. I did so and deleted the browser history (which took 2.5 hrs to set up the phone as new) and it came back immediately. disheartened to hear it is also happening on chrome. with out java script many sites do not load properly and are inoperable. this is the second iPhone x i have gotten as prior to this the phone would not notify me of any calls, texts or emails also a known ongoing issue for the new iOS.

How interesting that Apple is aware of the problem and has no real suggestion for a permanent fix. I was thinking of purchasing an X, wondering if the age of my iphone had something to do with the persistence of the Amazon prize win. Think instead that Samsung has made a sale. Wonder if Lawrence has numerous shares of Apple stock he’s looking to protect, why else is he so “hurt” when someone blames Apple/Safari/IOS upgrades. Hey, family and friends with Samsung have Not experienced this and other issues. Don’t take it personally!

I doubt he owns stock in Apple but what’s frustrating is the fact that everyone keeps posting the same “fix”. It apparently doesn’t work for everyone and the statement about going to bad websites is ridiculous, the last time I checked Forbes, the Guardian and the Post aren’t bad sites. Something needs to be done because hav to delete my data is getting old.

Forbes in particular has served up malware in its ads several times. Which is why I don't go to the site at all, although it isn't the source for this one. But the whole scenario is you go to an infected site and a cookie gets set. I've forgotten the full site name, but it began with 99 when I saw the popup. However, you will see it in the Safari address bar. As that ad provider has a presence on many other sites the cookie will be recognized on those other sites. So you need to find the first site that you saw the popup on and delete its cookies, and the ad providers site. Or just delete all cookies in Settings/Safari-Advanced.

The other important thing to do is to NOT click a "close" button in the popup as that executes Javascript code (which it isn't really a popup, it is a web page that looks like one), but instead go to the address bar and overwrite the address with something harmless like google.com. Then close the page and kill Safari.

Thanks for calm and sensible reply. When I responded to Haka11 that “interesting” Apple is aware of issue (Haka11 stated he/she had corresponded with Apple. And has had problems with 2 iPhone X...) I apparently again hurt the feelings of a more sensitive soul than you Haka11 or I. Yep, avoiding websites insane, constantly deleting data also.

Yes, no amount of deleting your data and rebooting your phone will have any impact on it. This is a vulnerability in either or both IOS and safari that allows a pop up to hikack the browser. It behooves Apple to understand the vulnerability and offer a feature or patch to close or better manage it.

I have noticed that if you just close the browser window for the offending site and then go right back to the site, it does not recur for some time period, like a day or two. The problem is that it’s infecting many many sites now. I have it occur on multiple sites daily.

Unfortunately it’s not “technically” a popup. It’s an “alert” which doesn’t get picked up by popup blockers because it actually pauses the browser.

It is likely a piece of JavaScript that is firing in the background of an ad that is following you around the internet.

For this reason, clearing your cache and cookies is really your best bet because it renders you “anonymous” to the script.

I find that these show up relatively soon after I log in to Amazon from my mobile browser to rent movies which mounts several cookies and kicks off some retargeting logic to serve me ads as I browse the web. When I do this, I make sure to clear my cookies to prevent unwanted alerts until the malicious script is weeded out for good.

Hope this helps!

I followed your advice when you first posted it, and it worked. However, I only disabled java scripting for 24 hours. When I turned it back on, I went 3 weeks without the “pop up.” When it popped up again, I again turned off java scripting. This time though, I only had it off for about 4 hours. I am now going on another 3 weeks, and it has not yet reappeared. Not sure if it is coincidence or not, but seems like an easy fix until a permanent fix is found. Thanks for the advice.

Deleting your history is not going to do anything. Also be wary of advice on here like to delete certain apps etc... That won't do anything either. Apple has to address this. There is a vulnerability in ios and safari that allows the browser to be hijacked. Malware companies have figured it out and are now proliferating the exploit. I get it a few times a day now, including on reputable sites.

Finally someone with actual advice! People keep saying clear this or delete this app. What I did was restore my iPhone to stock deleted all apps then reinstalled iOS 11.2.5 and didn’t reinstall any apps but it still happens on both WiFi and Lte. It doesn’t happen on my computers so obviously it’s an Apple issue.
