JVC bluetooth headphones not connecting

Can anyone advise why my new JVC Bluetooth headphones won't connect with my iMac but they will with my iPad?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Try resetting the Bluetooth on the iMac. If you also use a wireless keyboard and mouse get yourself a wired set to do this reset. Also check with JVC to see if the device is compatible with Mac OS particularly El Capitan.

to pair a bluetooth headset to a device it has not been paired with before one has to put it into pairing / discovery mode

and make sure it does not have an active connection with any other device at the time
