Messages - Known Contacts are "Maybe"

Not sure what happened. I did two things recently. I logged out of iCloud and back in. Also, I upgraded to 11.2.2.

All my history in Messages for known Contacts all say "Maybe" in front of them.

If I click on the contact that says Maybe in Messages, the contact info is completely blank.

If I go into Phone, Contacts, all the contact detail is there.

What is going on? :-/

I found this in another post. It has fixed my iPhone but not my iMac.

This is a Siri Suggestion feature that can be toggled off at Settings > Contacts > Siri & Search > toggle off "Find Contacts in Other Apps".

What is happening is that your device received a message or email from a number or address with a name that could be linked to it, e.g. an email from "John Smith " or a message from a new number that says something like "Hi, this is John Smith."

I wonder if that's an actual fix or does it just turn it off (ie. prevent it from showing), because the explanation under the toggle describes "...delete any unconfirmed contact suggestions..." when turned off.

So, if the "Maybe" has something to do with "unconfirmed contacts", would not sending/receiving a text for that contact do same (ie confirm it), and thereby removing the "Maybe" element in the message header.

Might be worth a try to see what happens by doing both, toggling that setting and sending a text, garywi might get back to give us some feedback. Would be interesting to know what happens because as said previously I've seen this issue pop up as well and ended up deleting the whole conversation to fix it.

The only observation I can add that might give someone else a clue, I recently saw the same “Maybe..” plus persons name following updating there phone number. I had a number of texts in one conversation from said person, with there phone number in my Contacts, they then changed Sim (with different tele number).

I first added that new to the Contact, message still displayed ok with there name, but when they told me the old number was no longer active I removed it from Contacts, that’s when there name altered to “Maybe“ plus name on the text conversation.

Couldn't get rid of the “Maybe..”, even by getting them to send me a text, on the iMac text was added to previous conversation but had the new number showing, and on iDevices the text started as new conversation - this done my head in so decided to start from scratch by deleting all texts on all equipment.

ps. if no number has been changed you could try sending or receiving a new text for that person to see if it kick starts something!
