"iMac Pro" kernel crash

I have a new iMac Pro 8core 32gb ram 1tb SSD and Pro Vega 64

(attached are a usb hub, usb audio speakers, usb trackball, thunderbolt 3 raid with a thunderbolt 2 raid chained to it via thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter)

I am looking for input

Within the first 8hours I had two kernel Panics but now seem ok...my iMac shut off and rebooted by itself...both logs have {"caused_by":"macos","macos_system_state":"running","bug_type":"210","os_versio n":"Bridge OS 2.0 .....

To note my Logitech software wasn't recognizing my trackball but it worked ...after crashes I unplugged and replugged the trackball and the software was able to see it.

Should I be concerned?

iMac Pro (2017), macOS High Sierra (10.13.2), null

For me it crashes while the iMac is sleeping. I have peripherals connected to all 8 usb ports (and its still not enough 🙂) and while I export 4K video with Final Cut Pro. If i export the same video in Full HD its not an issue. As soon as i set it to 4K, around the 10%-20% mark of the export process it restarts with a kernel panic.

This looks to me like a combination between the T2 chip (while sleeping) and the video card (while exporting video). If this is true, this is a huge issue. Apple will not change a **** thing unless a class action suit is filed. Just like with the butterfly keyboard. So ladies and gentlemen, I suggest you ask for a refund. If this issue is not fixed in the next 2 updates I'm asking for a refund and this is going to be my last mac. Im building a PC.

Okay after 3 visits to replace my motherboard by Apple premium support company, Apple has decided to replace my machine. My hope that this is hardware problem they have fixed but based on these posting, it appears Apple is not externally acknowledging this is a problem. If it is a "chip issue", how long would this take to fix??? I will let you know if my new machine that Apple is sending me solves the problem. I keep asking all the engineers and "highest level of support" folks if they are aware and they saw no. Just like everyone else is saying in this thread. Only thing that makes me optimistic is this did not start happing until I had the machine for probably 6 months. I encourage everyone to use the proprietary Apple app CAPTURE DATA and have your machine crash logs and other files uploaded to Apple engineering. Remember my files using this app were 3 large files over 1 gig each and I had to do it twice until Apple engineering said he was the AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 embedded video card on the logic/motherboard that was causing the crashes. We need more folks to do the Capture Data thing to see if everyone is having a hardware issue like mine was diagnosed to have. I hope the new machine does not have the same issue, but an earlier post said he had gotten 2 new machines and they all kept crashing. How long does it take to make a redesign video chip, I would think long.

Like I said like 4 or 5 months ago, panics have pretty much stopped after I turned off all the sleep stuff. But there's still screwy stuff happening on the I/O bus. I have 3 LaCie thunderbolt connected, 2 are TB1 and one is TB3. Watching the lights when I click Sleep, it takes about 20 seconds to quiesce, and then #22 starts to write like crazy, and then all the lights go off and the systems sleeps. For 3 seconds. Then the drives wake up, and #2 starts with the I/O again for a few seconds. But the screens stay dark, and the drives stay lit for 90 seconds, and the whole thing continually repeats. Can't find what's doing this, but it can't be good for the drives.

I still get green artifacts on my second screen. But it's a 2010 Cinema and nobody is supporting that. Funny thing is an Apple update fixed the problem for a month, and a subsequent update broke it again. So engineering is still screwing around with video in the background working on something....

Lastly, I have a box that drives the Displayport for the Cinema Display, a CalDigit USB-C dock. Had to give up on the audio coming through that because something causes long stream disruption in the audio.

So LOTS of I/O bus issues still happening. But at least we're not PANIC dumping every couple of hours like the beginning when I had power saver enabled.

One thing that troubles me is that this 9 page thread exists and there are at least half a dozen separate people experiencing the issue. I would say conservatively that you could triple the number of people affected that arent reporting it. So how is Apple not aware of this issue. I am starting my effort to get a repair/replacement when I get back from vacation next week. I will for sure be pointing whomever I speak with to this thread.

mc22cc, if you are right about the engineers and high level support not knowing about this issue then I'm getting angry. Seriously now, how can they not know about this? Based on the number of occurrences reported here they must see these crashes on their own iMac Pros. Not to mention all the error reports they get every time the machine restarts and we send the errors to Apple.

I have the same problem. Apple tech has replaced Motherboard, SSD, and power supply. Still problems.

I thought it was a Thunderbolt adapter and external drive issue but it happens without any Thunderbolt device attached. It seems to happen when I use Compressor or Final Cut Pro X. Which tells me the graphics chip might be screwed up.

I did everything that this forum said to do, disable FileVault, AppNap, etc. - Still crashes.

I even booted into safe mode. Still crashes when using Compressor.

My iMac Pro 10-core has been routinely rebooting itself or freezing ever since I got it. I keep thinking I've isolated the problem (USB-C to DP adapter, or USB hub, or a certain piece of software, etc) but it keeps doing it. Sometimes it'll kernel panic 12 times in a day, other times it'll go for 3-5 days with no problems.

It's absolutely infuriating for such an expensive computer.

I have the base model with a Vega 56 - bought new at the Apple Store, had a few kernel crash since I have the machine, but not for a few weeks at least. I commented above in this thread...

It does seem to be gpu related, the only issues I had with the machine were all related to multi-display support, I ended up using only one external display, because two would cause frequent issues when coming back from sleep - that is the iMac's built in screen not coming back on until reboot & kernel crashes...

Same problem with the Vega 56. Crashes randomly being in use or not, but more often during sleep periods, especially long sleep periods, like overnight.

It’s not only related to Compressor or FCP. I’m a developer and I don’t use it at all. I got the crashes using Xcode.

Interesting thing to note is that it doesn’t crash when running in Windows. It can stay in sleep mode for days and will be just fine.

Which tells us that:

- it’s not related to the Vega card

- it’s probably not a hardware issue because the problem only happens in macOS

I got my iMac Pro back in April, it was running 10.13.4 when I got it and I updated to 10.13.5 beta, then final and the problem has remained all along. The issue does still happen in Mojave beta 2 (haven’t tried beta 3).

What puzzles me is that people on this forum almost all got the issue, yet Apple doesn’t say a word about it. I don’t have enough contacts with other iMac owners to know their experience but I’d be interested to know how common this issue is. It seems people who got their machines exchanged still face the issue with the replaced units.

The only workaround I have found is to disable the sleep feature and the Secure Boot. I rarely have crashes this way but it’s not ideal and it bugs me that such an expensive machine can’t be put in sleep mode using its native OS.

Jul 4, 2018 8:55 AM in response to MFASM

Mine is a Vega 56. It's also seemingly not related to sleep, because I've had my iMac Pro set to "prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off".

It seems as if it frequently crashes or freezes when the display turns off, so I set the displays to never turn off... then I had a run of several days with no spontaneous reboots or freezes, but then it happened again several times so that wasn't a solution either.

It often reboots while I'm working on something, and often when I come back to the computer after being away for a while I'll find that it rebooted in my absence.

My latest case was created on May 22 -- and it's now been weeks since I've even been able to get a response to my inquiries. I continue to believe that this is related to the T2 chipset, but nevertheless, it is clearly a large(r)-scale issue. Considering the premium price tag that we've all paid for this hardware, I would expect better assistance and formal recognition of the issue. If it is as systemic as it appears, I believe that we are all entitled to know. For the record: The issue continues to (randomly) plague my device, and in response to more recent messages, doesn't appear to have any direct evidence to the graphics card; and for whatever reason, the engineers were last interested in only collecting "network" logs from my device. This issue continues to occur whether my computer is at the login screen, sleeping (w/ no video), in the middle of a Logic session, or playing a taxing game. Apple Support, please respond.
