Noticed the cpu is high jacking computer (kernel)...

Please readIf kernel_task is using a large percentage of your Mac CPU - Apple Support as well as the links within it.

It's not possible to identify the exact cause without additional troubleshooting, but taken along with the other symptoms you described it strongly indicates one of the following:

  • a failed or disconnected temperature sensor
  • cooling system inefficiency (an inoperative exhaust fan on Macs so equipped, possibly clogged with dust, including the heat sink)
  • a worn out, missing, or non-Apple (user-installed) battery on portable Macs
  • similar hardware-specific causes including internal hardware additions or modifications, external USB and other connected devices, or the driver software required to use them.

Each of those possible causes is equally important and requires its own investigation.

If you can find no other explanation for its behavior, an SMC Reset is justified: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support.

....according to os guidelines all Mac airs can manage os high Sierra...my is mid 2011...4gb, 256, with iCore 7...

That's correct. All but the first few models anyway. I have High Sierra running on several of those exact same Macs with the exact same configuration. It runs better than any other operating system. The solution will be to identify which of the above causes is responsible.

After clean install MBA mid 2011is ruined. The clean install just ended in a very slow operation when most recent version of high Sierra finished and stated up. Is almost impossible to work. Later I did a clean install again of the original OS, Lion...after the install...the same...very little improvement. Noticed the cpu is high jacking computer (kernel)...and the Mac only has the basic Apps after the clean install, any additional app...This situation happened suddenly and computer was working fine with os high Sierra 10.13.1...last week on Sunday after watching some films from external HD...ejected HD... closed app...and closed the Mac...on Monday open it and problem started...I’m certain the OS has a timer (stutnet style)...that triggers this...to force clients to get rid of their still functional devices...according to os guidelines all Mac airs can manage os high Sierra...my is mid 2011...4gb, 256, with iCore 7...nevertheless if anyone finds a solution please share....

Galt:

Thank you again for your reply. I changed battery around 3 months ago, and computer had been working fine. Battery change is not an open heart surgery (I’m sure you know that, but understand your comment is you are in Apple’s payroll), fan and heat sinks were not clogged, actually in good conditions when battery change was performed. No internals changes (ram, ssd it can’t be modified), no usd no external HD connected during clean install. Nevertheless it may be the battery which I have on list as a possibility, still more incline to think the update has issues, it only takes to read the issues here with computers that are newer than mine, facing the same or other problems. Nevertheless, thank you again for your assistance....investigation continue....

A user-installed battery is a very common cause of poor performance. kernel_task will throttle the Mac's performance due to the non-Apple replacement battery.

Read CPU usage at 90 percent...sometimes for one of many reports on this site.

By replacing it yourself, you will have forfeited the option to have Apple replace your MBA's battery. $129 includes diagnosis, parts, labor, and a warranty. Apple reserves the option to refuse servicing a Mac that was subject to unauthorized modifications, at any price. That fact permanently limits your ability to have Apple diagnose the other, less likely causes. Presumably, you considered the cost savings worthwhile.

I've read them. The causes always belong to the same predictable categories. As I wrote I have a variety of Macs including your exact model and ones even older than it, and they're all running perfectly well. Good luck with yours.
