Horrible problem with red eye and zombie (white) eye when using the iPhone X flash in low light. The pictures are grainy. Called Apple and they walked me through wiping my phone and restoring it. Didn't fix the problem.

You're dealing with the limitation of a small lens (even if it is a 12 megapixel camera) and the laws of lighting when using flash in low light. Even my $2000 DSLR with a $1000 lens attached takes grainy pictures in low light. Real cameras avoid red eye by flashing a pre-flash that adjusts the retina's in people's eyes to avoid red eye. Cell phones don't. That doesn't mean the phone is defective nor does it require a recall. It's simply the limitation of what we're working with. The good news is there are loads of photo editing applications you can download, many of which are free, which do a great job of eliminating red eye. One of my favorite apps is Camera+, but it does cost $2.99.
Yeah I know. I think that all the bigger cameras are that way. Yes, I'm jealous.
Because of age and poor health (mine), I went from Full-Frame to Crop-Frame some six or seven years back. About a year ago, for the same reasons but more advanced, I went to mirrorless.
I, too, am having the white eye issue with almost every photo. Going in to try and salvage photos through external apps is working okay but its a pain to do and the picture quality is far less due to the dots over people’s eyes.
It sounds like no update that Apple releases would be able to fix this because it is a lens placement issue on the actual phone? Correct?
I bought the iPhone X mainly for the camera and am still within my window of time to return/exchange. Very disappointed in this phone.
They need to do a recall on this phone! The same thing is going on with my phone I did a factory reset even received a replacement phone & im still having the issue. This is so wrong
And Il don't disagree with anything you have written. It brings us back to the limitations of a cellular telephone camera.
Lightroom is just fine if you're making a quick adjustment on a JPG file. But Photoshop all the way for RAW.

I have my fixed focal length lenses, but when I'm on a trip, I must admit I love my Nikon 18-200mm lens. It's done quite nicely for me. I'm just a hobbyist anyway.

Is that range real or is that the full-frame equivalent?
It's the DX range, which translates to 35 to 350 mm in full frame.
My new camera is Wifi and Bluetooth enabled and the remote is an iPhone app, which doesn't limit anything to program auto mode.
I tried mirrorless for a week, then realized it just wasn't for me and went back to a traditional shutter.
I fully understand. If my health was better, I would be there also.
