Apple Watch Series 3 Scratch (or maybe I’m overly anal/ocd

Hey all, I am new to this so sorry if this has been asked before. I purchased an Apple Watch series 3 less than 24 hours ago. I am a pilot and today when I was loading my bag my hook (coated in platidip) fell and very lightly bumped my watch. I am super anal about my devices and want to keep them in near perfect condition (impossible to keep perfect I know). I noticed today there is a very tiny what appears to be scratch on my display. The only thing is I only see it if I point my phone flashlight in the perfect angle or direct sunlight again in the perfect angle to see it. I have been reading and there seems to be some form of fingerprint coating on the watch And this scratch that I see in the perfect light doesn’t completely appear to be a scratch. It looks more like dirt or oil that just will not come off no matter how much I rub with a microfiber cloth. Did I scratch the glass or did I just mark this coating? Any help is appreciated thanks so much in advance!!

If you would prefer to have your Apple Watch inspected for an official diagnosis, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider:

I'm afraid there is nothing further that I can suggest.

Given the nature of the issue, Apple Support are limited in how they can assist you by phone, other than by arranging mail-in service. If you would prefer to have your Apple Watch visually inspected, then I suggest making a Genius Bar reservation or visiting an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

Otherwise, given the nature of the mark - and as annoying as it clearly is for someone who prefers to keep their devices in near perfect condition (as do I) - you may wish to try living with it for a while to see whether your annoyance level drops.

Thanks for the response. That’s just it I can’t tell. The screen has the tiniest of a mark on it but it takes some serarching and perfect lighting and perfect reflection angle to find. It isn’t visible unless everything is perfect and when I do see it it almost looks like the marks left from finger prints but it won’t come off with the cloth. Is there anyway to really tell?

The application process for Glaz Liquid may damage Apple Watch as it involves handling it in ways that do not comply with Apple's guidelines.

Apple specifically advises, for example, that:

  • Apple Watch can be damaged by solvents.
  • Apple Watch should not be dried using a hairdryer (or any other external heat source).
  • Important handling information

Reviews posted elsewhere also include, for example: "It’s described that GLAZ Liquid helps with nano/micro scratches. BUT IT DOESN'T I tried on iPhone and apple watch but it didn’t fill any scratch. Visibility and cleaning of fingerprints is worse than before".

Hi again Jonathan

Do you know if the same fingerprint treatment was used for the iPhone 6s. It also has ION X glass, but my iPhone is 3+ years old with no protector and no scratches. It does show fingerprints though.

I also have a small mark that looks like it is only in some sort of coating. Clearly not the same as my ION X iPhone.

Do you know if the same coating is on the sapphire screen?

Thanks

Barry

Hi

If the screen appears to be scratched, then it is certainly possible that you have only scratched through the fingerprint-resistant, oil repellent coating. It is normal for this coating to wear away under normal use, but it may have become scratched without damaging the screen beneath.

Unless the issue is due to a manufacturing defect, cosmetic damage - including scratches - is not covered under either Apple's Limited Warranty or AppleCare+.

Apple does not offer a screen repair or screen replacement service for Apple Watch and Apple Watch is not user-serviceable. The watch may instead be eligible for whole unit replacement via chargeable, out-of-warranty service.

If you wish to explore this option, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider to establish any available service options, likely timescales and cost:

Note that, whether you have scratched the screen or not, Apple does not recommend using cleaning products or polishing or buffing the watch with abrasives; these will wear away the coating and may also (further) scratch the display.

A good quality screen protector (of the thin film type) may be effective in obscuring or reducing the visibility of the mark, as well as in providing some measure of protection against future damage.
