iMac Pro restarting because of a problem?

iMac Pro intially booted as a Mac Pro backup, then reverted and reinstalled fresh High Sierra because of some compatibility issues, now getting forced restarts with this error code, thank you for any help!

I was getting kernel panics, mostly while using Premiere/After Effects, also my wifi would sometimes freak out.

Took to apple care, they replaced the logic board, didn't help. After chatting with Apple support technicians and giving them all kinds of logs from the computer, they said it was related to the software on the computer not being able to contact a server and freaking out, making it kernel panic and restart.

I have little snitch installed on my computer to monitor internet traffic, I uninstalled it and changed over to the open source software Lulu instead and it completely fixed my problem. The computer has not had a single kernel panic in over a week, it used to have a panic 2-3 times per day while doing video editing.

Other things that helped reduce panics before I got to this solution:

Disconnected a USB-C iMac Pro Hub

Turned off Filevault

Turned off power saving features

Hope that helps someone else.

Glad to hear HappyPappy that things are moving along for you. As for me, I've become so disenchanted over the last several months since my Mac Pro exploded when I tried upgrading it from Sierra to High Sierra, and now dealing with all this (the Freeze/Crash/ReStarts) that I'm just getting fed up. Okay, fair enough, I probably got one of the first Mac Pros off the assembly line and it didn't have the advantage of the newer ones currently shipping. Okay, so be it. So now what do I do? I need a working Mac Pro. The only reason I have an iMac Pro is because the Mac Pros currently shipping are now virtual relics, and from what I understand the "new" Mac Pros won't be available until 2019, and that's only a rumor. If Apple doesn't step up I'm not sure what I'll do.

I'm still waiting to hear "their" side on this coming Tuesday. We'll go from there.

****

Thank you,

John

Another stupid question. When you get your new motherboard, I assume the SSD(s) can simply be swapped out from the old to the new motherboard not necessitate doing any kind of a "restore" or any other complications or adjustments? I never had to do this, so just planning ahead. Hope this all gets resolved soon. I'm sure the engineers at Apple are doing their best.

So, like a few of you, I also got a call from engineering in the US. The nice lady referred to what was being discussed here on this forum and asked me to help her gather the necessary information. I duplicated the freeze triggering event and I uploaded a report. They will analyse it and call me back same time tomorrow. Chances are she will ask me to do it again on a clean test partition I got installed. Or maybe the report from today will already have exposed something significant. Let's wait and see.

I have to say that I'm impressed by Apple's approach so far, guys. They really want to figure this out. I hope we'll help them get this machine to the status it's inspected to be in: perfect ;-)

Viktor,

Thank you for the info. But I'm a bit confused. Glad it seems to be working for you!

You say you are getting the message "A software update is required to use this Startup disk."

Is this simply an informational pop-up message, or does this require additional steps beyond simply running the 10.13.5 update?

I only ask because I've had so many weird issues, and don't want to chance falling into another endless odyssey of hours or days recovering, after simply running an update.

Please advise. A million thanks. On 10.13.4 right now. Want to update, based upon your reply to 10.13.5.

All the best,
John

High Sierra v10.13.4 (17E199) on a new (late 2017) iMac Pro, 3.2 HGz Intel Xeon W, 1Tb SSD (APFS)

Jun 5, 2018 8:05 AM in response to Viktor Fougstedt1

That's also a big nuisance for me: my external drive recycling or waking up over and over again when the computer has gone to sleep. That's way I just leave the iMac pro on, just because of that. Would be great if they could fix that too.

I also had the Crypto_Val’ errors, but after I wiped the SSD and put back a Timemachine **, those errors were gone.

My feeling is there's not one thing wrong with the iMacs being shipped, but several. The OS, the way it is installed on the SSD's, probably the Vega64 card... I updated to 10.13.5 but didn't get the additional upgrade message for my harddisk...

Viktor Fougstedt1 wrote:

The 10.13.5 update ran as usual. On first startup after the normal update I got a popup with the message "A software update is required to use this Startup disk." The only two options was to update (I never wrote down the exact text on the button, but I seem to remember it actually saying "Update disk" - not certain though) or to select another startup disk.

I updated to 10.13.5 as soon as it was available last week. (No 'restarting because of a problem' since then.)

But, I did not get prompted like you for any additional update related to the startup disk.

(I'm on a 10 core / 64 GB / 2 TB SSD / Vega 64 from the refurbished store.)

Been there, done that, i.e., total restores so many times over the last 25 years. Something inevitably seems to go awry even with the best of intentions. Make sure you have multiple clones, in addition to your TM backup

I seem to remember most Adobe apps being very sensitive to any changes, and in particular had to call Adobe's tech support to get PhotoShop up and running again. It took over an hour. I purchased the last produced DVD paid version of the creative suite, which I still have and is still licensed, as I don't need the latest subscription versions.

Quick question: Is there any quick, easy way to determine which apps may need to be deactivated, other than checking each and every one?

p.s. ....by any chance is anybody noticing any weirdness going on with their "keyboards?" Sometimes I'm experiencing latency, or odd misinterpreted keystrokes ??? It's probably me. I have one of those retro "old-school" http://matias.ca/tactilepro4/ click-keyboards. Not using Apple's stock keyboard on my iMac Pro.
