Apple TV turns itself on

My Apple TV is consistently turning itself on at about 5 am every day. Once it turns on the activity turns my Sony tv on. Why? How do I get my Apple TV to stop turning on by itself?

A bluetooth and/or wifi device (iPhone or iPad probably) is re-connecting to the network at 5 AM, by automatic re-enabling of bluetooth and wifi, and re-connecting to networked devices to which it was paired, waking the Apple TV from sleep. That makes it network related, even if the Apple TV and the network are the same as before.

You can test this my turning off bluetooth and wifi on the iPhone in Settings (not in Control Center!), or use Airplane Mode at night.

I just started having this same issue with my Apple TV 4K. Network-wise I haven't changed anything for a while, there aren't that many things even connected to the network (2 phones, an ipad and a PC - almost always asleep). The router may have updated itself lately but this shouldn't really bother the ATV. ATV updates are set to auto, so the latest tvOS may have also changed something.

I don't know if this helps to find the root cause but only thing I can think of is that I put the Apple TV Remote app to the Control Center on one of the phones (didn't even attempt to use it though). When the problem started to appear, I immediately suspected this Control Center "applet" and tried it - but it was not even activated to the ATV and asked for the pairing code (I had not used the app on that phone at all apparently). Anyway, I removed the whole app from the phone but the problem persisted. I think I'll have to disable the CEC in ATV so it does not wake the plasma up all the time for nothing.

Even more strangely, when the ATV wakes up and then wakes up my Panasonic plasma, the power saving functions do not work normally - after getting back to sleep the ATV will not sleep my Panasonic plasma as it does if I command the ATV to sleep with the remote. The screen will stay on indefinitely with a black picture (wearing out my plasma!).

Very frustrating "feature" and definitely not something I'd expect from an Apple product...

We are having the same issue. We bought the Apple TV over a year and a half ago and it’s worked perfectly up until just recently and it’s started turning itself on. Most of the time we find the Apple Tv on along with the Tv it’s connected too also on when we get up in the morning. It’s happening while everyone is asleep.

Also vazandrew you’re not providing any support by constantly saying it’s a network issue. Provide some valid troubleshooting ideas and maybe people would be a bit more receptive and accommodating.

For instance my Apple TV has worked fine for almost a year and a half without issue and now it’s all of a sudden happening? Nothing new has been added to my network. Nobody is up when it happens. No computers are being used. iPhones are all plugged in and charging while we sleep. What further network troubleshooting would you suggest?

My apple TV started to play music randomly on its own, I've own this same ATV for a long time and it just started doing this, really annoying because it also turns on the TV. The only "different" thing I did before the problem started was to use the Airplay feature with my laptop since that day the problem started. Can't figure it out what's going on

My 4gen ATV turns on but a different, reproducible situation. I use an iMac as external monitor (plugged into the video out of my Macbook Pro). When I unplug the iMac from the MBPro, the laptop resets its screen (all the windows from the iMac display now on the laptop display) and that is when I hear Apple TV turn on. I can connect my MBPro to Apple TV from a display icon in my main menu bar, but the laptop seems to select for, or search for other displays once the iMac is disconnected. Easier for me just to unplug the power cord from ATV.

No offense, but "something is going on with your network" is not a helpful response. My network is working fine. The issue seems to recur when I connect my Mac laptop to the Apple TV. If I disable the devices from connecting to the TV (my iPad and Mac laptop), the device works fine. The number of people having this issue seems high if you Google it. Seems it would be a bug in a release of one of Apple's update. I think it seems connected to the two-factor authentication. It never had this issue until that became a feature.
