Contacts missing on iMac after upgrade to High Sierra 10.13.2

My contacts are on my phone and ipad, and the names show up on my Mac, but when I click on a card, there's nothing there. I've installed the security update, restored contacts on icloud.com, switched on and off and on and off and on the setting for iCloud contacts in the contacts app, but no go. What now?

Great ! deleted some contacts a very important note from the above article .

You can’t delete contacts in read-only accounts such as Facebook and LinkedIn; you must delete the contacts directly in Facebook or LinkedIn, for example. If you don’t want to see contacts from a specific account, stop using the account in Contacts. To do so, choose Contacts > Accounts, select the account, then deselect its Contacts checkbox.

If you stop using or remove an account, any edited contacts remain in your default contacts account.

So, basically I've deleted everything that resides outside my computer and reinstalled (not sure that's the right word). Anyway, removed gmail and added it back. It took awhile to download all the messages I have saved in files, but at the end...everything is right! Yay! I don't really understand it, but the AppleCare guy kept thinking something just wasn't talking to something else completely. So maybe it just needed a kick in the pants. Anyway, thanks again for a week of your time thinking, article searching, experimenting, whatever else you did. And thanks for your patience. Another happy customer. Best, Laurie
