This happened to me often. Except for me it would not always correct itself. I had to follow their advice and delete and re setup my mail account. I don’t know why but it was rather annoying. Thanks for sharing.

You could try and see what change you may inflict upon your gmail account directly
by using the google mail app for iOS; sometimes visiting directly can be useful. Also,
for those who wish to sort or not import email to their iOS device, their app works...
Gmail - Email by Google on the App Store - iTunes - Apple
Description The official Gmail app brings the best of Gmail to your iPhone or iPad
with real-time notifications, multiple account support and search that ...

At least its a free app direct from google, not some third party's with separate agenda.
Given I've never used an email client software application in Mac, the app is helpful as
it does not archive downloads into a specific device. And can be useful to troubleshoot.
In any event...
Good luck & happy trails! 🙂
Hey man... something very similar happened to me a few days ago. It was with my inbox, spam, trash and my sent folders. I opened them and they showed some messages from 2017 mixed with ones from 2018. After a few seconds in each folder the old messages disappeared, assumingly going back to their rightful places in the que. I don’t have an explaination for you but you’re not alone in this. It hasn’t happened to me since that time but I did think it was odd. Probably some sort of glitch in the mail app or in the sync with gmail. I haven’t seen anything on it besides this though. Good luck!
The same thing happened to me as well. I saw an email mixed in my recent sent mail on January 4, 2018 and on the list of messages it just said “Thursday”. I didn’t recognize the email as being sent 2 or 3 days prior so I clicked it and when I opened it, it showed in the time stamp under the recipient/sender info “January 4, 2017”. When I went back to my sent messages, the message was no longer there and only visible by searching (or I assume you could have scrolled back to it). I don’t know what to make of it but I’m glad to not be alone!!!
I had the same thing happen to me twice. Once on my iPhone 7. And then again shortly after I bought and updated the iPhone X. Like everyone else I haven’t found a cause anywhere. I guess it’s a new glitch in the mail application. Doesn’t seem to bother anyone because it corrects itself. I’m just glad I’m not alone in this. Everybody thought I was crazy and I couldn’t find any answers.
Same thing happened to me!!! It was shortly after just updating my phone within the past week. I couldn’t find a real cause but wrote it off as a glitch. ***** about your girl being involved though.
