Safari won't let me sign in to BBC account

I want to sign in to my BBC account, but when I click on Sign in, the first error page says 'Safari can't open the page, the operation could not be completed, 'KCFErrorDomainCFNetworkError 303'.

When I reload this page the error message changes to 'Safari can't open Safari-resource:/Errorpage html because MacOS doesn't recognise internet address starting with safari-resource'.

I have been in touch with BBC and they suggested clearing history, cache and ensuring cookies are correct, all of which I have done. I have just reinstalled High Sierra and the updates, to resolve my issue, but this has not worked. After all this I still cannot access my BBC account sign in, but I can from my Windows tablet and phone. So where is the conflict with Safari? This has only been a problem since installing High Sierra... I think.

'Safari can't open Safari-resource:/Errorpage html because MacOS doesn't recognise internet address starting with safari-resource'.

That means the link you are using to sign in to your BBC account is not formatted properly. A webpage link has to start with http:// or https://

If you are accessing that link by just clicking on it on a webpage then please provide that page's URL. Copy and paste it from Safari's "unified" URL field... the one that probably shows "Apple Inc" in it right now.

You should also review any Safari Extensions. Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any Extensions you are not familiar with or don't want, click the Uninstall button and they will be gone. No Extensions are required for normal operation.

Something appears to be causing Safari to redirect to a URL that isn't a URL. "Safari-resource:/Errorpage html" is not a URL and makes no sense to Safari.

If you are so inclined here are some troubleshooting steps to follow, in no particular order:

If you don't get anywhere, you can use the following procedure to determine if the problem is internal or external to your Mac. Causes may involve your router, your ISP, the DNS Server(s) it uses, or certain user-configurable options.

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Load macOS Recovery by holding and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac with a third finger.
  3. At the macOS Utilities screen, release those two fingers.
  4. Choose Get Help Online.
  5. Safari will launch, but it will lack your bookmarks, favorites, history and other preferences.

Determine if the problem persists while using Safari in that mode. After that, restart your Mac normally, and reply with your observations.

Hi John

I have had Kaspersky on my Mac for a couple years with no problem, but this latest version has caused the problem. All uninstalled, I have searched my Mac for anything further related and removed. The BBC sign in is now WORKING!

Thank you very much for your help, lesson is learnt. I didn't know that anti virus was considered junk for Macs, but I do now.

Hi John, here is the Etrecheck report. Hope it tells you something useful!

Jan 16, 2018 4:42 AM in response to Janiegel

Yes. Both "CleanMyMac" and "Kaspersky" will prevent your Mac from working.

I thought you said you were not using any "anti-virus" junk, but I realize you never said that. My mistake for not being more insistent. It would have saved us both a lot of time.

Remove both of those garbage products in strict accordance with their respective instructions. Be prepared for the need to completely erase your Mac and rebuild it from the ground up, contingent upon the potential for damage inflicted by using such things.

Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk.
