Panther Upgrade - destination volume?

First time poster-- I have OS 10.2x and want to upgrade to 10.3 Panther.
I inserted the install disc, followed the Installer instructions through the Introduction, License, etc until I reached the phase on Destination Volume. There was nothing to select. The pane was empty.The continue button did not activate. Only active button was Go Back. I quit the Installer and after several hours figured out how to get the CD out and restore to my original OS. Here I am.
Why isn't there a choice for the destination volume?
Does there need to be one?
How do I move to the next phase and get the newer version loaded? I may be asking too many questions at once. I did look through previous posts and found nothing specific to my problem. There are a lot of posts!

Darby905,

in order to run DiskWarrior you have to boot from the DiskWarrior CD. This is completely independent from the system on your hard disk.

Adding to Gulliver's comments: you don't actually want to install DiskWarrior at all, unless you're planning to use it while started up from your hard drive for the purpose of repairing other drives. The only way you can use it to repair the hard drive we're talking about here is by starting up from the CD, running DW from the CD, and selecting your hard drive in DW as the volume to be rebuilt.

Just a clarification- If the system requirements for running Diskwarrior are OS 10.3 and I only have 10.2, how can I run it at all? In other words, will DW operate with 10.2? I have emailed their support with the question of do they have a version that will operate with my OS 10.2. they have not responded. Thought some of you guys may already know the answer. Hi, Darby. When you start your computer up from the DiskWarrior CD, the OS in use is the one on the DW CD, not the one on your hard drive. Since the one on the CD meets DiskWarrior's minimum requirement, there's no problem.
