My Phone will not play voicemails

This started recently. I get a voicemail and see the transcript but when I press to play the message, nothing happens. The time bar does not advance even though it's the the Play position. If I call my carrier voicemail, I can play the message with no problem. Is this an iOS11.X bug? It worked fine before. I have an iPhone X with iOS 11.2.2. My wife is having the same problem with her 8 Plus, also with iOS 11.2.2. I looked at various fixes online and nothing worked. This does seem to be a common problem.

Any ideas?

On iPhone X, press the play message button and them put the phone to your ear to hear it and it will play. It must be tied to the proximity sensor on the X.

You can try rebooting your phone. If that doesn't work, contact your carrier as voicemail is a carrier feature.

Press and quickly release the volume up button

Press and quickly release the volume down button

Press and keep holding the power button (hold past the swipe to close down slider bar) until you see the Apple Logo

See if you can play voicemail after your phone comes back up.

If this was a widespread issue affecting many, we'd see lot's of threads about this, but we're simply not.

Restoring your phone from backup would be the next step I'd do. You can restore from backup. This link will help you:

Have you contacted your carrier? Voicemail is a carrier feature. Since there are multiple variables such as different carriers, it could be an issue with your carrier, especially if it's happening on your X and your wife's 8. As I mentioned, voicemail is working just fine on our two iPhone X, running iOS 11.2.2.

Thanks for the response, but I have tried that more than once. If I dial my carrier voicemail box from the phone, the message plays just fine. Since this was not "broke" before, I think it might have to do with one of the updates. As I stated originally, my wife is having the same problem on her 8 Plus, which is also at the latest iOS version. I wonder if this bug is associated with the new transcript feature. The two things seemed to coincide.

This is not the problem. Voicemail playback was working until very recently.

Thanks, but the voicemail works when calling into the carrier's voicemail line, and we have different carriers. Also, it was working until recently, which coincided with two iOS updates.
