Does iMessages use data when on WiFi and does SMS Messaging do the same.

Does iMessage use data and does SMS texting use data when on WiFi and does Picture messaging cost for this?

The simple answer to your question is that if your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, it is not using cellular data. Even when using the Messages app. However, should your Wi-Fi connection become weak, your iPhone could revert to cellular data to ensure you remain connected. If you would prefer to use only Wi-Fi for data, you can take a look at the following support article to find out how to check you cellular data usage and how to turn off cellular data for all or some of your apps, including Messages.

Check the cellular data usage on your iPhone and iPad
