iPhone 8+ says it needs newer version of iTunes??

I just got a new iPhone 8+. In setting it up, it complains

The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes, or click Learn More for more information about getting the latest version of iTunes.

my iTunes is 12.4.3.1 which Apple Store tells me is the latest. What am I missing?

Argh dang-it I didn't know... I'm using an older Mac Pro and have an excellent experience with 10.8.5 - it does everything I need and the user response is very very snappy. I tried running 10.10, and it was laggy and slow. I can't even imagine what High Sierra will be like. I understand that many people just keep upgrading to the latest hadrware and software. I don't like the "features" I'm seeing in the latest OS's and the new mac Pro line (I have them at work) and would love to just use my original 10.8.5 system which works perfectly for everything I need. Is there really no way to sync the iPhone 8+ with my existing iTunes library?
