I just got a new iPhone 8+. In setting it up, it complains

my iTunes is 12.4.3.1 which Apple Store tells me is the latest. What am I missing?
Sounds like you may be getting a cached page of the iTunes download page. The latest version is 12.7.2. Try clearing your browsing history or using a different browser.
Devices running iOS 11 require iTunes 12.7 or higher.
Itunes is currently on 12.7.2. What OS are you running on your computer?
That OS is too old to run the newest version of iTunes which your device needs.
Use the App Store to download High Sierra.
iTunes 12.7 requires macOS 10.10.5 or later. It will not run on 10.9.5. Even if you can move it, you can't restore to an iOS 11 device from a machine running 10.9.5.
You're running a 5 year old OS. If your Mac Pro is an older version you could try:

It's iTunes not the phone that's incompatible. I would highly recommend updating to get iTunes up to date.

Argh dang-it I didn't know... I'm using an older Mac Pro and have an excellent experience with 10.8.5 - it does everything I need and the user response is very very snappy. I tried running 10.10, and it was laggy and slow. I can't even imagine what High Sierra will be like. I understand that many people just keep upgrading to the latest hadrware and software. I don't like the "features" I'm seeing in the latest OS's and the new mac Pro line (I have them at work) and would love to just use my original 10.8.5 system which works perfectly for everything I need. Is there really no way to sync the iPhone 8+ with my existing iTunes library?
I tried 10.10 and it was very laggy - much slower user experience than 10.8.5.
Is it a viable option to sync everything via iCloud and not via my computer? I have a lot of data but even the 2TB plan doesn't seem very expensive; does it work well to sync audio, photos, movies, etc. through the iCloud?
The only major drawback from the iCloud option is the speed issue.
Depending on the size of your device you could be trying to backup up to a quarter gig of data. Since upload speeds are about of third of download speed this could take hours to days to complete.
I backup to my computer via iTunes in just a few minutes.

I have a computer running 10.9.5; is it possible to move an iTunes backup file of my old phone from the 10.8.5 machine to the 10.9.5, so that *its* iTunes can restore it onto the phone?
