Loud clicking when insert CD or DVD

Mine does the exact same thing. I posted about this a few weeks ago in the section specifically about the optical drive, and got a few responses back from folks that seem to know what they are talking about. They all seem to agree that it IS normal. I am still not totally convinced, but then again, I might just be paranoid. When I spend a big chunk of money on something, I tend to listen extra hard for any noises indicating that something might be wrong. So since I have apple care, I am willing to just wait and see. FYI, there are at least two different optical drives that I know of that come on the MBP. One of them, doesn't make the clicking noise, the other one (the one we have) does.

I also noticed this right after I started using the optical drive. Every time I put in a CD or DVD, it feels like the drive is going to jump out of the thing! You can really feel it on mine, especially from underneath. Kinda makes you nervous, though.

my 3 week old 15" mbp c2duo now will not read a dvd or cd, I put in, get the "zzzzshh zzzshhhh" sounds, then some really loud clunking and clicking, then disc gets spit out, wont appear on desktop ever, often gets stuck with no way of ejecting.
Any thoughts?

It would seem the answer is the same for all these CD/DVD problems..........Use the warranty that came with the machine and get a new drive. All of the symptoms listed are in line with a defective drive.

mrssparks, I of course know it is under warranty, just a shame this seems to be happening to many new MBP's, its a real shame apple chose such a problematic drive to be in their machines. Whomever was in charge of choosing drives in MBPs should be fired.

Well my 3 month old MBP is going back to the store to get the drive replaced under warranty. Bummer. I'll ask then. I was hoping there'd be another solution as this is 2nd time in 2 weeks I'm taking it in. First time to have top case replaced.

I just bought my MBP 15" this week and it has the same problem with clicking sounds when inserting a cd/dvd. I plan to call Apple Support to get their take on this and will share their response here.

the MB/MBP with "lower" clicking noise are the Matshita's Superdrive. the ones with the clac (couple of times when insert, one when eject) are the LG (most recent laptops)

i dont like that clac either, but the LG are firmware flasheable superdrives. the Matshita are impossible to update, so they cant be region free. Also the LG are faster ant the same speed than the Matshita.

the only complain is that LG's are noiser.

Yes, I have had my new macbook pro for about 60 days and the CD drive failed today. what makes me really irritated is the guy that I spoke with in customer service assured me that this was NOT an on-going problem. I guess they don't read the support forums. I'll be making an appointment tomorrow at my local Apple Store (thankfully we have one) and get this fixed. Really not a good sign for something that cost a LOT of money. I am less than pleased.

If I may ask, how did it fail? Did the intake motors burn out? Did it stop spinning the discs? Would it NOT read any particular type of disc? Just curious.

My MBP superdrive has the same problems. Does somebody of you know if the normal MacBook-drive is the same as in the MBP or has the same "problems"!
