Is it really true that when updating my Apple TV to the newer 4K model I need to also buy a new HDMI cable, and that this information is nowhere to be found on the device?
My TV is not 4K. The screen gets green.
I have rebooted, taken off cables, reset the device and everything else that these chats recommend and still nothing.

I finally fixed mine by altering some of the settings of the apple tv. I suggest you try the auto match options for display.
If you weren't planning on getting a 4K TV it would have made more sense to get the 4th gen as you will not really see a difference on a 1080P set. You would only need the high speed certified cable to pass through the 4K signal and HDR.
I would still advise trying a different cable and port. Test on another TV, if possible, to verify.
Not a problem. As you don't have the 4K TV you don't need the more expensive 4K branded cable. Also worth trying another TV, but if not possible and it persists take it to Apple.
In no way did I suggest that anyone shouldn't be complaining, simply that upgrading before owning a 4K TV doesn't get you much (if any) benefit over the 4th gen.
In order to get those features you need a 4K set. The higher bitrate, and HDR are part of the 4K movies, you will only have access to the 1080P version.
In terms of the issue at hand, you need to test on another TV or take it to Apple.
Issues with airplay would be due to a network issue, and requires a separate discussion.
Same thing here and i even bought a 4k cord especially for this, and still not working.
Very frustrating to not be able to watch movies i own and/or just purchased. I am supposed to get the hdr 4k, and instead i get nothing, literally.
the settings can easily see and auto detect i am using 1080p, so being unable to sort out the signal and instead shooting me a green screen on all hdr and 4k is upsetting and seems illogical.
I spent $200 for an upgrade in experience with the 4k, and the apple tv wont even play movies ive owned for a decade. And dont get me started on airplay, which still cant play anything hd without horrible persistent stutterring.
Lastly as a preemptive response to the person replying we shouldnt be complaining if we don't own a 4k tv... not that its any your business, but i plan to get one soon, and i should still be able to use my expensive apple product to enjoy hdr, truer colors, and higher bitrates in the meantime, given it says it supports 1080p in the specifications of the product.
Thanks a lot. I figured I would eventually get the 4k TV, so I bought the latest version. I will try getting the new cable to see if it solves the issue. Still disappointing.
Could not have expressed it better. If I want to use it in a black and white movie, I should be able to.
