Safari won't load Gmail, 2018 January

I have been able to access Gmail using Safari for years no problem. It was even working yesterday. But now Gmail won't load properly. It logs in and gets to about 80% and hangs. I can access my Google account and Google Calendar using Safari and Chrome, and I can access Gmail using Chrome.

I have reset Safari, cleared all website data, and rebooted my Mac but nothing works. It still won't fully load Gmail.

I'm running Safari Version 9.1.3 (9537.86.7.8) on a 2010 Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

Any suggestions.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), null

Same issue - I've had this problem for a week, using 10.9.5 on 2009 iMac. I don't think I have an option to upgrade to newer version of Safari - so what are my options. Everything works but launching the Gmail message window. I actually can use the HTML option to see the messages - no problems with Chrome - this is clearly a Safari issue.

Please refer to Eric' earlier comments.

Safari is bundled (part of the OS) which means there is no way to upgrade Safari without upgrading the OS, and because of the age of my Macbook I don't want to do that. My OS and software (apart from Safari) is stable and doing what I want it to do. Also I don't like some of the newer apps that come bundled e.g. iTunes and iPhoto (now replaced).

So for me the best option is to use a 3rd party browser, currently Chrome but I will probably investigate Firefox.
I'll only upgrade my OS etc when I replace my Macbook. My philosophy is that when you get a good setup just to leave it and to only upgrade when absolutely necessary (works for me).

For other users it may be that the best solution is to upgrade the OS or to wait for Apple to issue a fix.

Only a couple of things have been screwed up for me, so far at least, so I'll continue to use Safari. It's my preferred browser, too. Bummer that I have to use another browser to load gmail because there are circumstances in which it's helpful to view my mail in the original Gmail environment. Not a big problem, however, since all my gmail is forwarded to Mail, and that's where I usually read and reply. Maybe that's an option for you? (The other issue is small, too, and viewing that site in another browser for the foreseeable future is acceptable.)

Thanks for posting that upgrading didn't fix your gmail problem. That consolidates my natural inclination to wait until most of the bugs are worked out of High Sierra. And like Hoki-Boy, I'll also be looking closely at what's been bundled with the upgrade to see whether the setup works for me.

btw, the reason I found out that my Safari preferences file had been corrupted is that Safari wouldn't open at all after the first time I restarted my computer in 2018. Just kept crashing. I was about to give Safari the boot forever. It's back in my good graces for now. Agree with Eric that Chrome is way too much of a resource hog. I've kept it on my system only for emergencies. Will check out his other suggested options in time.

Thanks to you & Eric Root for asking and answering a question that I'm sure was plaguing way more than 40-some folks around the globe. Same problem here, same OS version & set-up except my Macbook Pro is early 2013 with 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7. I won't waste any more time now trying get Safari to do what it used to do. Explains, too, why I've been pestered lately by pop-ups from apple asking if I'd like to upgrade to Sierra or maybe it was High Sierra. I've been clicking "not now," when what I really meant was "I hope not ever." I remember all too well the nightmare of dealing with the glitches in Mavericks. Unrealistic I know, but I wish they'd stop fixing things that, for me anyway, were never broken.

Just out of curiosity, by any chance did your Safari preferences get corrupted at the start of the new year? I lost my browsing history and a whole bunch of other weird stuff because my preferences got overwritten. Not by me! Had to trash that preference file and start over.
