Why are there all the non-western fonts?

I'll never use half the fonts on my mac and MS word keeps wanting to download even more.

I'm glad that the fonts exist but I'd like to delete them from my mac - fonts like BiauKai, Batang, Nanum Gothis etc. delete is not an option for these fonts in FontBook.

Any ideas or thoughts of info as to why they are there?

Thanks

Thanks CountryGirl56. It helps to know they are necessary. My curiosity is piqued however so I would love it if someone could give one or two examples of what fonts do within the system.

Thhis all started with me getting fed up with MS office software always wanting to download fonts I would never use. I suppose I’ll just allow it to so I don’t have to keep hitting the cancel button.

Thanks again fo help.

I do understand the need for fants in all languages, and if I sold my Mac to someone who needs them I’m sure they could re-download/install them.

Also I am not insular just mono-lingual.

All languages should be available. It’s just that for me I don’t need them all.

I was just wondering about them.

The reasons for them given above do not really explain why I can’t delete them.

By the way as I said I was just wondering.

Also now I wonder why in font book there is a smart folder of English fonts but not others for different languages. A whole new question.

Anyway thanks for all the replies

As Apple sell their products world wide they need to include as many international fonts to suit the needs of their global customer base. Offering selective macOS's to certain parts of the world is a bit short sighted as we all communicate with each other.

In mail for example if some one sends you an message in a particular font and you don't have it installed then the system will just render it in its default, this can be extended to the printing publishing world where the impact of the text would be lost.

Lets be more international, and extend the hand of friendship, its the 21st Century lets not be insular.
