You are welcome. Your Mac is too old for Internet Recovery. A bootable USB would allow a reinstall, but since you have never downloaded Yosemite using your Apple ID, it isn't available to you.

If it is a late 2009 iMac, that computer can be upgraded to High Sierra. To make a bootable installer, you need access to another Mac where you can sign into the App Store to download the installer. I'll post links to El Capitan, Sierra, and High Sierra. The computer you download the installer on will affect which OS you can download.

How to get macOS High Sierra

Sierra download

El Capitan

You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program which will do all the work for you.

Have you ever downloaded Yosemite using your Apple ID? If not, you can't reinstall it.

Why are you trying to reinstall the OS?

Try running this program in your normal user account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate it. I bought a used iMac on craigslist, the computer crashed one day and I erased the computer to factory settings. When I try to re install Yosemite 10.10 its won't let me without (I think) the previous owners Apple ID. I have never downloaded Yosemite 10.10 with my Apple ID. Would a bootable usb drive fix this problem?
