forgot iTunes password for encryption of iPhone backup

I have lost the password to backup/restore iPhone backup in iTunes.

As this cannot be retrieved would backup to iCloud require the password to retrieve or am I better off setting up an new Apple ID just to backup my phone to the computer and use my existing ID for apple store etc?

Any suggestions would be appreciated
