.MTS video files don't preview consistently in El Capitan?

Hello.
I've noticed that my collection of Sony video camera MPEG-format files (with extension .MTS) have now begun to preview from El Capitan's Finder. (At last! I thought....) Upon upgrading my machine (2008 edition Mac Pro) from Snow Leopard to El Capitan, .MTS files began to "spacebar-preview" just fine for the first time... Except - not consistently.

In prior OS versions like Snow Leopard, this format wasn't recognized, and always appeared to need a conversion from me first... But now they appear to be recognized - SOMETIMES.
Due to the age and edition of this machine, I don't foresee being able to meaningfully upgrade beyond El Capitan, so I'm starting from this assumption; I'm looking for a solution that works on this OS version.

Some days they do, some days they don't.
Any one particular .MTS file might preview fine one day, but then NOT on another day.
Can anyone suggest an explanation or fix for this inconsistency?

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
