convert page layout back to word processing

I created a long document in Pages 6.3.1 using the Page Layout format (because I wanted to include images). Now I would like to create a Table of Contents, and realized that I have to have the document in Word Processing format to do that. I Selected All in the document, and pasted it into another document that was already in Word Processing format, but none of the images were pasted.

In the Page Layout document, I selected File>Convert to Word Processing, and the menu shows that this is completed (File>Convert to Page Layout is the only choice now). However, I still have linked text boxes and can't create a TOC.

How can I convert the text boxes to regular body text? Aside from copy/paste every single box (80+ pages)?

Hi Sheri,

Converting a word processing document to a Page layout document makes one change: It removes the Document body, and all of its contents (including any inline images or other inline objects. It does not move anything from the Document body into text boxes.

It may be possible to move the text from the text boxes to the Document body using an AppleScript, but I suspect there would be some difficulty writing a script that would do this sequentially in the order you want. Cut and Paste from a COPY of the PL document's text boxes to a new WP document may be your best route. Either route will leave you with the added task of reformatting the entire (new) document before being able to construct a TOC.

Are all the Textboxes linked?

If so you can get the text out of the Textboxes by clicking inside the textbox(es) and going command a (select all) Copy, then Pasting the Text into the Document Body. If there are multiple sets of linked Textboxes you will have to repeat this for each set.

I suggest working in two documents, your existing Layout version and a new Word Processing document so you do not damage or lose anything in the process.

As Barry has mentioned, the reason most people go your method is they can see no other way of incorporating the graphics or images into a Word Processing document and because they see the images as separate objects then set about placing them loosely on the page.

In fact if you use the method of cutting and pasting the images/objects into a Word Processing document into their own Paragraphs in the Document Body, you not only can index all your text into the TOC you can also do that with your captions and maintain consistent and accurate spacing and positioning for everything using Paragraph styles for not just your text but the images as well.

If you like I can walk you through the entire procedure.

"Pages doesn't handle images the same way in WP mode as in PL mode, and it's a bit more difficult to include the images."

Pages WP docs let you insert images and set whether they are to Stay on Page or to Move with text. Stay on page pins the image to a position a fixed distance down and right from the beginning of the section. Pages are controlled by the amount of text (in the document body) and the space available for that text, an are automatically added or deleted wen text is inserted in or removed from the section.

If a page disappears because there's no need for it to hold some text, an image set to Stay on (that) Page disappears from view, but not from the document. If the page is recreated later, the image reappears n the same location as before.

Pages set to Move with Text are pinned to a specific location in the text (but are not necessarily located adjacent to that pin). As text is added or removed above the pin, the image will move with the text.

Peter Breis recently suggested placing each image inline in a 'paragraph' of its own to improve control of its location.

This might be worth trying in your document.

Thanks, Barry. I was afraid that would be the case. 😟 Pages doesn't handle images the same way in WP mode as in PL mode, and it's a bit more difficult to include the images. But I think that might have to be my solution. I did apply styles, and maybe those will stick (at least the labels, if not the formatting).

Looks like some work ahead of me. Fortunately, I had already converted a WP version to PL, and was working on the copy; I copied all the text to the old document and pasted it at the end. Still some cleanup to do and I need to re-insert all the images, but the styles were already set up. So maybe not as much work as I feared.
