Outdoor Walk for Apple Watch does not work at all!!!

Im frustrated that the outdoor walk app for Apple Watch doesn't calculate the actual minutes of exercise I do. I did 35 minutes yesterday only needing 20, and it registered 0 of the minutes that I did. I have been busting my tail all month to get the "new year" badge, ensuring that these last days would count towards making sure I did my 7 in a row, only to get up today and find that the 35 mins I did yesterday, didn't even register on my watch at all. It was a very chilly day, so to keep my hands from freezing, I did most of my walk with my hands in and out of my pockets. I hate that I have to now select "other" to maintain my exercise. Now I won't get my badge, even though I did actually complete the challenge.

I think Apple needs to fix this. It registered via GPS where I walked, and the two laps I did, along with the 1.5 miles I walked, but none of the time. It's not my fault that it was cold where I lived, and that my gloves while meant to keep my hands warm, do not keep them as warm as my pockets. It's the same as when I'm on a treadmill, I hold onto the bar to maintain my heart rate, while elevated. It's like none of the actual exercises work to truly record minutes, outside of the "other" exercise.

This is a total failure on Apple's part. I'm sure that there have been other days where this has been the case where I've done the work, but the watch didn't register the time I did.

And there is no way to go back and adjust it, to make it right. Which *****, because I know that I did the walk, and the time...I was there, i froze my buns off!!!

Hi

To credit progress towards your Exercise goal, the Activity app aims to identify activity that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk. This requirement applies both during general daily wear and when recording workouts via the Workout app.

Exercise credit is awarded for each minute during which this requirement is met. It is possible that you are not meeting that requirement and/or that your activity is not being tracked accurately.

If you have not yet done so, then it may help to first update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:

Whilst Apple has not published details of the algorithm that determines when activity is deemed to meet the required intensity level, the definition does vary by person and depends on your personal information. To check that it is accurate:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

When recording specific fitness activities, be sure to use the Workout app (or a third-party app that shares data to Health) and to choose the activity type that most closely matches your workout, including choosing Other for any workouts that are neither included within nor sufficiently similar to those in the main list. This enables your watch to use the most appropriate sensors and data sources when tracking results:

Note that Apple Watch can pair and sync with compatible gym equipment, by following the instructions here:

Use gym equipment with Apple Watch

For more accurate tracking of outdoor workouts and to enable proper calibration for treadmill-based workouts, check your Location Services settings:

On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services:

  • Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
  • In the list of apps beneath, if the option is shown (depending on your watch mode), then check that Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using.
  • Also enable options under System Services including Motion Calibration & Distance, Wi-Fi Networking and Mobile Network Search.

Apple Watch Series 2 & 3 models have built-in GPS, so the paired iPhone does not need to be taken along during supported outdoor workouts in order for them to be able to access Location Services information. For other models, it may help to take your iPhone along, with Location Services enabled.

During general daily wear and when using the Workout app to record relevant workouts (ie where arm motion is involved) when GPS data is either not relevant or not available - including for treadmill workouts - the Activity app and Workout app track your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) when estimating results including progress towards the Exercise goal.

For the best results, allow the arm on which you are wearing your watch to swing naturally as you move around during daily wear and to move as expected during workouts.

Resetting your existing calibration data and recalibrating your Apple Watch may help to improve the accuracy of activity-related estimations. More information and detailed instructions are available via the link below. Resetting your calibration data and following detailed instructions for calibrating your Apple Watch can be equally as helpful for Series 2 & 3 models and will not erase your Activity history:

For the best performance from your Apple Watch - including the most accurate readings from the heart rate sensor, which is used continually during workouts - be sure to wear your Apple Watch snugly (but not too tightly) during general daily wear and during any workouts. Apple suggests tightening your Apple Watch band before workouts and loosening it again afterwards:

If you would prefer to receive Exercise credit for the full duration of workouts, regardless of their estimated intensity levels, then track them via the Workout app using "Other" as the activity type. This will credit one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout. Active calories will be estimated at a rate equivalent to a brisk walk or based on data recorded by the heart rate sensor, whichever is higher. However, note that neither distance nor a route map are recorded for outdoor workouts under this workout activity type.

Otherwise, if the issue still persists, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (remote diagnostics and/or mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:

This is the same advice that has previously been provided to others because you have the same Apple Watch as other users, running the same software as them and experiencing the same issue as them. The same real advice therefore also applies to you.

As previously advised, Apple Watch Series 3 has built-in GPS. When recording Outdoor Walk workouts in areas with good GPS reception, it is therefore not necessary to swing your arm.

If the issue persists (or if you wish to make a complaint), then - again as previously advised - I suggest that you contact Apple Support (remote diagnostics and/or mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:

You are not talking to Apple here - this is a user-based technical support community.

It is not possible to add credit to the Exercise ring manually. To receive credit for all Activity app rings, your Apple Watch must instead be worn during any given workout.

Some third-party apps offer the ability to receive Move goal credit, but not Exercise credit, due to programming / API limitations, on your Apple Watch for workouts that are undertaken whilst it is not being worn. For example:

Fitmanual - Complete the Move Ring every day on the App Store

Other such apps may be available in the App Store.

Jonathan,

It was a very brisk walk in 40° weather. My watch stays updated. The problem is the health app, and the requirement that my arms swing outside constantly. It was freezing, but I choose to walk outside because I was near a track and didn’t have workout clothes to go to the gym.

I used my pockets off and on to keep my hands from freezing, even though I had gloves. My watch stays on tight around my wrists, as they are not that big to begin with.

Perhaps, Apple employees should read the actual complaints instead of using canned responses to complaints. Believe me when I say that I keep my watch updated to the latest OS version because I want to make sure that it tracks everything that I do during the day. That’s the reason that I purchased it, so I could keep track of my activity and for it to work seamlessly with my phone.

When I walk it’s not slow at all, as I am a short person, so I’ve been trained to walk at a very fast pace to keep up with everyone else around me. Even in the military, I had to walk fast so I wouldn’t be left behind.

So please give me some real advice, and not some canned response. How can I add my 35 mins of exercise that I did do to my watch and get credit for the exercise ring to earn my “ring in the new year” badge???
