Greetings, davidmn.

I see that some of the function keys on the keyboard you use with your Mac Pro aren't reacting as expected. F7, F8 and F9 aren't moving back a song, pausing music, or muting your Mac. I'm happy to help.

macOS Sierra: Create keyboard shortcuts for apps -- See if you've changed the function key behavior by choose Apple menu > System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts to see if you're using those function keys for something else.
Change the behavior of function keys on your Mac -- If you've assigned a different function to those keys but you'd like to have them behave as standard function keys too, follow the steps below:

If you prefer the top row of keys to always behave as standard function keys without holding the Fn key:

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. Click Keyboard.
  3. Click the Keyboard tab if it's not already highlighted.
  4. Select "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"

With this option enabled, the keys on the top row act as standard function keys (F1–F12). To use a feature indicated by the icon printed on a key, hold Fn while pressing the key.

If the issue persists, connect your keyboard to another Mac and test. If those function keys still aren't working, you need a new keyboard.

Let me know how that goes.

Take care!

Thank you, Peter, for your reply.

That, however, did not resolve my issue. The function keys come with not only the "F"+ number function, but also with functionality for a music player, ie iTunes. So F7 is "backtrack/restart", F8 is "play/pause", F9 is "next track", F10 is mute and the last two are volume "up or down".

My issue is that the F7, 8, and 9 do not provide that function while the mute, and volumes up or down continue to function as before. This was the original set up of the desktop, just plug-in the keyboard and those functions worked. Not sure why they have stopped working. Recently installed music app called "Vox"and it uses the same function keys but F7-9 work with that app but not with iTunes. So what have I done to arrive at this point?

The app VOX did not affect these keys as they functioned in this poor manner prior to installing VOX. I found sometimes with itunes they worked and then at other times not. Of late, they do not function.

If you have any recommended solution, that would be great. Otherwise I will just keep trying to to figure it out myself.

Thanks

David
