The Em Dash

When composing a text message, the Em dash — like this one, is now gone! Double dashes don’t do it for me! Where’d It go?

Hi Robin,


-- -> — is a Text substitution, and is set in System Preferences > Keyboard > Text.

User uploaded file

Once defined, it acts system-wide in any text handling application.


Since there are time when I want t enter several hyphens without having the pairs converted to em dashes, I've not defined that substitution for my own use. In stead, I use the keystroke combination—built into the Mac—to produce em dashes directly from the keyboard.


Shift-option-hyphen will produce — (an em dash).
