Notifications from Safari

I returned to my computer to find a notification on screen. On clicking, it opened Safari and took me to a site selling vitamins and drugs. This isn't the first time this has happened, and the first time it did I went to System Preferences>Notifications>Safari and selected 'None' for Alert Style plus deselected all the other options, yet still I receive notifications that open Safari to this website.

Why have I never received a notification from Safari that opens to a different website? Is this site really the only one making use of Safari notifications? And why am I unable to disable the notification? Am I missing something or has the site's programmer somehow found a way to bypass the Notifications preference?

Thanks in advance,

Steve = : ^ )

For the sites you specified, choose one of the following:

  • Allow: The site can always send you notifications.
  • Deny: The site can’t send you notifications.
For all sites:

Allow websites to ask for permission to send push notifications: When you visit a website that can send you notifications, you see a dialog asking if you want to receive them. To stop seeing the dialog, deselect this option.

Thanks. I was unaware of this. I'd only visited the Safari notifications preference in System Preferences. When I clicked on Websites>Notifications, nearly every site listed said 'Deny'. The exceptions were sites I expect notifications from, like ebay, Apple Discussions etc. and the one from which I've been getting unwanted notifications, which said 'Allow'. I've changed this to 'Deny'.

This is obviously the problem, and I'm marking this solved.

I just saw one too, from a site I have shopped on occasionally called Lucky Vitamin. I accidentally allowed it to push Notifications to me a few weeks back when I meant to say NO to them. Lately, I have been trying to find a way to stop these too. So this afternoon, I looked around my computer for possible solutions and found the solution. This is how to stop them:

  1. Open you Safari browser, if it isn't open already.
  2. On the top left if your screen, under Safari (next to the Apple icon), click on Preferences...
  3. The Preferences box will open.
  4. Click on the Websites icon tab at the top of the Preferences box (the blue pic of planet Earth).
  5. On the left side of the Preferences box now, under General, there's a list of things you can click on. Scroll down to Notifications and click it.
  6. In the right side of the Preferences box is a list of websites that have asked for permission to show alerts in Notification Center. To the right of those sites are options to Allow or Deny. Choose Deny for all you want to stop getting them from. Or, you can click on the website in that area and Remove it from the list.

You are welcome. Before getting too complicated, try changing the notification setting to something else, quit/reopen System Preferences, and then change it back and test.

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit System Preferences.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

If the pop-up reloads, force quit Safari (command - option/alt - esc) and reopen with the shift key held down. If that doesn't work, disconnect from the Internet, go to Safari/History and delete the website. Quit and reopen with the shift key held down. Then reconnect to the Internet.

I would uninstall Cocktail. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

We're all human here, and we all make mistakes every now and then. You probably clicked to 'Allow' Lucky Vitamin to send you Push Notifications by accident, as I did, even if you've never bought anything on it. You likely browsed the site at one time or another, or it popped up when you were on another website that they may be associated with. I don't normally buy my supplements from them, but I have bought a few food items when they had the best prices. I price shop them against Vitacost and Amazon regularly. Vitacost is owned by Kroeger and is very often cheaper than Amazon for many things I buy.

Point taken about obsolete software and I'll take this opportunity to delete it. None of it seems to relate to getting notifications from Safari.

As I only get one of these notifications every few days – always from the same site – and once the notification has been clicked on it disappears from Notification Centre, I can't see a way to test if the problem is fixed or not.

Thanks for the reply. To be clear, I'm not getting a 'pop-up'. I'm getting a *notification*. It appears top right of my screen like all the other notifications and clicking on it opens an app (Safari in this case) like clicking on any of my other notifications does. The only weirdness is that I have "None" selected under the alert style in Notifications prefs for Safari.

I've deleted the orphan files.

Point taken about Cocktail.

P.S. I clicked 'Helpful Answer' in the alert email for your reply and it brought me here but didn't mark your reply as helpful, and neither can I mark it as Helpful from here. This seems to be a bug in the email alerts.

Jan 31, 2018 2:36 PM in response to CountryGirl56

Thanks for the reply. I don't see any of the usually described adware behaviours. I'm just getting a legitimate notification – in the same location and format as my other notifications – and clicking on it opens Safari. I think this is legitimate behaviour for the Mac – except that I have Safari notifications disabled.

Here's my EtreCheck report. I don't see any adware, but I don't really know what I'm looking for. Do you see anything suspicious?

Thanks again,
