I was having the same issue (left airpod not charging or being recognized) and I found a fix. When the left AirPod was in the case I lifted up on it ever so slightly (maybe 1/64”) and the light changed to orange and it started charging. So I stuck a very thin piece of foam with adhesive on one side into the fitted groove so the AirPod now sits higher in the case and charges. Hope this helps!

Same problem with me only white light flashing no amber light
My apple AirPods second gen white or amber light doesn’t come on and they won’t connect to my phone and the green light doesn’t stay on for very long for the lights to come on
The "No Blinking" white means that your Airpod wants to connect but couldn't
I asked apple customer service about it but they didn't know what it means and couldn't help
My left airpod wasn't working, so I pressed "Forget My Device" for my airpods. That's when I tried to re-pair it and all I see is white light with no flash. I manage to get it working by dropping my left earpod on my table a couple of times, put it in, hit it (or smacking or flicking it) down a couple of times and try to shove it in as deep as possible. After all that I tried to re-pair it hoping it would work and a red amber light started blinking. apparently my left earpod hasn't been working because it wasn't charged properly, and that caused the earpods to not able to connect.
Hope this helps anyone out there looking for answers
THANK YOU! This was exactly the case for my pods, the right one had died because there was a piece of fuzz in the charger and needed to be cleaned out so the bottom of the pods could charge and connect! GENIUS!
