I know the default is to assume that iPhones warranties are only valid in the country where they're purchased, but there's an exception for India. It would have to be one that isn't service carrier specific (like my unlocked iPhone 7), which is pretty easy to find.

Apple introduces international warranty for iPhones in India, but there’s a catch | Hindustan Times

Apple has quietly introduced the international warranty facility for its phones in India, which means people who have bought iPhones in the US or any other country outside India will receive warranty privileges here as well. But, there’s a catch.

The warranty is only for iPhones that are factory unlocked.

In various markets, Apple sells phones in partnerships with network providers. The deals usually mean the phones are available for a low initial cost but buyers commit to stay with the provider for a fixed period. People often buy phones abroad using such plans and force an unlock, which enables the devices to be used in India. Such devices will not be eligible for the international warranty.

Since these articles first came out, there has been absolutely no update to the Apple Warranty. None. Zip. Nadda. Zero. Thus, until Apple officially revises the warranty, we as regulars on this forum should continue to tell people what Apple's published warranty is, which is iPhone warranty is NOT international.

y_p has developed his own way of helping people, I doubt that it will change anytime soon. When he tells them what should happen it seems that facts are not involved, just surmise.

Certainly his right. Personally, I would feel terrible if I told someone something that led them to believe one thing, only to find out it was simply not what they thought.

Hi

No iPhone warranty is only valid in the country of purchase.

Buy iPhone in the country where you live.

Again, India is the only known exception.

iPhone in India now gets global warranty, you can safely buy cheaper iPhone X from Hong Kong, US

Apple fans in India have a reason to rejoice as the company quietly introduced international warranty on iPhones. This means that iPhones bought from outside the country will be applicable for a one-year warranty in India. It is important to note that the warranty will only apply for factory unlocked iPhones and not carrier-locked models.

To be fair, the article you're referencing explicitly admits that there has been no change to the wording of Apple's warranty terms and conditions. So until such time as that changes, there is NO international warranty on Apple's products.

However, it's been heavily reported by media sources in India as a quiet policy change. The original poster can take that for whatever it's worth. As far as I know, the OP's case (bringing an iPhone into India) is probably the only way that an iPhone warranty would transfer to repair in another country.

I'm not saying you are incorrect, and I have read both of the articles you linked, but neither of them seems to provide a link to an Apple document that verifies the information that I could see. I may be wrong, but I just would hate to incorrectly advise someone.

There are no guarantees, and all reports were that any such policies were informal and subject to change. However the Hindustan Times is not a rumor site. Here's another article from a reporter who directly contacted sources at Apple.

http://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/iphones-to-come-with-international-w arranty-but-no-official-word-from-apple-…

There isn't any official documentation available from Apple on the same but one of our sources within the company confirmed that Apple has been offering the service on an informal basis for a couple of months now.

Another source suggests that one should not get excited about the new policy as Apple will closely watch this space to keep a tab on the situation. Policies can be changed anytime. If this leads to the increased grey market sale of international units, Apple can even roll-back this policy or add an additional clause for availing warranty.

Yes, true. I suspect this all relates to the recent opening of an Apple assembly plant in India. Assembly, mark my words. Parts made in China?

I have to admit I am not happy with the way Apple operate in India; we are forever reading of poor service from the Authorised stores. And an Apple office in Bangalore that seems to be quite without direction.

It is long since time that Apple came to an agreement with the Indian government so they can operate in the interests of both Apple and the Indian people.

That's irrelevant until the legally binding terms and conditions that you agree to upon purchase change to reflect that. News outlets report a lot of things, that doesn't make them true or valid.

I'd think the only way to know would be if someone in India can check. I'm sure that there have been plenty of people who have gray market or phones purchased by friends or family overseas.

Anyone know if the support coverage check is really country specific? This does say India, but I'm not quite sure if this means I could get a warranty repair if I were visiting India.

For what it's worth, I'm getting that my iPhone 7 is covered. It's been just under a year since I bought it.

My advice to you is not to get involved with matters relating to India. The Indian government have not allowed Apple to operate as is the company's genuine practice because Apple do not accept having to have allow a 50+% majority share value to an Indian National.

The creation of the assembly plant in Bangalore is meant to be the door through which Apple can eventually open up genuine Apple stores. And long overdue they are.

I know way too many people who are originally from India. Many have iPhones, and I suspect many have purchased them for their relatives back home. I do understand that is a huge demand for genuine Apple Stores in India along with many claims that several are about to open.

All I can say is that it's been well reported, although I understand that warranty service in India can be unpredictable.
