I would first go into System Preferences > Touchpad and turn off the feature of "Tap to Click." This means that to actually select a file, you will have to press down on the trackpad. If that is already off, and just when the cursor passes over things, it highlights them, then you most likely have an issue with the trackpad. Things like liquid under the trackpad, a battery expanding, or a plethora of other issues can cause the trackpad to "ghost click" items.

Since it sounds like you're accidentally dragging and dropping files, I think you may have this enabled:
System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad > Trackpad Options > Enable dragging
