Let me back up here. I haven't used Thunderbolt and I've only briefly looked at it. I thought that it might have stuff like speed information (which FireWire or USB does have).

What's the model? The overview from About This Mac will have that. For example, mine says "MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)". Also - in System Report under "Hardware" it has "Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,2". Those can be used to look up the specs. Mine is Thunderbolt 1.

If it's Thunderbolt 1 or 2 there should be no issues with ethernet speeds anyways.

Ethernet is only as fast as the pipe to which it is connected. If your computer supports Gigabit Ethernet then it is capable of maintaining the maximum speed of most single pipes. My cable provides up to 100 Mbps which is fine for my system that supports 1000 Mbps.

The speed of an adapter depends on the adapter and the port used. Thunderbolt would be faster than USB2.0 but USB3.0 should be as fast as Thunderbolt 2.0. The adapter to which you linked should work. I think that adapter is for a TB2 port.

You're really limited to the speed of ethernet, which is basically 1 gigabit/sec for a 1000BASE-T connection. It also depends on what else might be sharing the USB-C connection. However, both Thunderbolt and USB-C have raw speeds considerably higher than 1 gigabit/sec.

Can you really max that out with your internet connection? Actual throughput is less than the maximum theoretical speeds. And in any case most current home internet connections (even fiber to the home) ends up going through an ethernet connection at some point

You should be getting comparable speeds with a 802.11ac wireless connection at close range.
