why am I not able to add a playlist to my iTunes

I am unable to create a new playlist from iTunes in my laptop. I am able to create a new playlist from iTunes in my iPhone but that doesn't show up in the laptop and I am unable to add songs to that.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)
