There are few ways to get documents onto an iPad from a Mac.
If you are using iCloud Drive for instance, you can copy or drag files to the iCloud Drive folder in Finder, and they will be available in the iCloud Drive or Files app on the iPad if its using the same Apple ID for iCloud as the Mac.
