Just look up what a "bathtub curve" is. Failures happen with any product, including high quality ones. They get taken care of under warranty, and of course some people get the AppleCare extended warranty to go beyond the warranty period.
Apple has some pretty generous policies. If I dropped my iPhone 7 hard and it doesn't, I could get an out of warranty replacement in the US for $319. If you really feel that the GPS isn't working, you might be able to persuade them to let you buy an out of warranty replacement for $299 (if you're in the US).
