Has anyone managed to make icon changes stick for Dropbox?

I have customised my desktop and icons for years in one-way shape or form and been fairly successful to date.


With the release of High Sierra, I have noticed that some icons, after being replaced with new icons images, don't retain the replaced images after a reboot.


The best example I have of this issue is the Dropbox folder icon. I can replace it as much as I like, make an alias and paste it on my desktop but the folder image will resort back to it's original every time.


I'm guessing there's a reset or something happening somewhere but I'm not sure where to start looking for this.


Does anyone have any interesting ideas on this or experience with successfully replacing the Dropbox or Google Drive folder icons in High Sierra?

So I looked into it and can confirm that both Dropbox and Google Drive (Backup and Sync) refresh their folder icons at startup.


Here is how I managed to get around it:

  1. Right-click the Dropbox app icon (in the Applications folder)
  2. Select 'Show Package Contents'
  3. Browse to Contents → Resources and find the file named "DropboxFolderIconYosemite.icns"
  4. Rename the file and replace .icns with .bak
  5. Paste your customised .icns file in here and rename it to match the existing file name as above
  6. Right-click the newly replaced file and select "Get Info"
  7. In the properties window, tick the box called "Locked" and then close the window


The last step is important because if you don't, it somehow manages to revert the image back to the original.

I've successfully done this with both drive folders with multiple restarts and so far all good!
