Mac mini (Late 2014) won't upgrade from 10.13 to 10.13.1 (or .2 or .3)

The title pretty much says it all. App Store says I have an upgrade available to 10.13.3. Right now I have 10.13 installed.

When the update runs, the computer restarts, but fails somewhere along the way. The Mac boots up and tells me that the updates failed to install, and asks me if I want to try again.

Occasionally, the failure is blamed on an app being open. But that seems to not be the case always. If I kill all apps, the update still fails to install.

I also tried to install from the downloaded install package - (not the App Store) - with the same result.

I have rebooted with CMD+OPT+R and tried to reinstall OS (which fails) and tried to repair the disk - which works. I just want my OS to be updated and secure.

How do I update my OS? Please help??

Mac mini, macOS High Sierra (10.13)

Frankly, I think you have OS X system file corruption that was worsened when you tried re-installing. I know you don't really want to do this, BUT:

Install El Capitan or Later from Scratch

If possible backup your files.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the CommandandRkeys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  2. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  3. When Disk Utility loads select the volume (indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the Device list.
  4. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
  5. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  6. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  7. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  8. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.

This will install the version of OS X you had installed.

Both seem to fail?

"Seem to fail," what happens exactly? Do you get any kind of notifications or error messages?

The installations fail. I will see the apple logo and a progress bar. Then the computer restarts and I get an an error message saying "Updates could not be installed." I may not have the error message exactly right but it is about that simple - no source of error is indicated here.
