Cannot connect to gmail account

I am using Mail Version 10.3 (3273) on a iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) running macOS Sierra 10.12.6. For some reason Mail started asking for my password to my gmail account each time I would check my mail. I would put it in and then the screen would look like this.

User uploaded file

Nothing would happen. The only available option was to cancel. I tried deleting the account and reentering the info. No change. I can access my gmail account via the browser so I know my info is correct.

At this point I am unable to access my gmail account using Mail.

Any suggestions?

Click on cancel , close the background window of mail prefernces and quit the mail application , again open mail application and take the cursor on top menu bar > mail > add account > select google enter your web mail address > click on next and add password .

Then go to system preferences > internet accounts ( the box of mail will be checked its your choice to select rest of options contacts , calendars .....but you must check them also to utilise the features ) .
