image size different between Photos app and image capture

does anyone know why photos and videos that I import from my iPhone X using photos app is half the size of the image capture file size? for example the same jpg or video in my image capture folder is 3.8mb, video is 96 mb however when I find the same picture on photos app folder its half the size.

I'm trying to sort out my iPhone pics/videos on my iMac and noticed the difference. it makes me nervous since some of the pics/videos were imported via photos app and not on image capture.

Check the settings on your iPhone X. Is your iPhone taking videos and photos in the new space saving HEIC/HEVC format?

Then Photos and Image Capture may be importing differently. See this support document: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support

on my camera settings I see Formats --> High Efficiency selected. however there is a little blurb on the bottom that says most compatible will require high efficiency if its 4K at 60fps or 1080p. so it seems like it'll convert to High efficiency anyways? I read through the support doc it seems like the"Transfer to Mac or PC" setting is no longer applicable to iOS11

is it safe to say that I should keep it at Most Compatible to retain the original size? I recently got the iMac so I'm new to moving pics from iPhone to iMac and so far its been a big headache. I'm just looking to get back the pics/videos to store it on my external usb. Sorry to say but in windows i was able to get the file as is, it just seems like apple has multiple ways of getting it resulting in different file sizes.
