Can't rename my Hard Drive

What happens if you click somewhere else instead of using return to finish the change?
Might be a corrupt .plist.
Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
Have you tried control - clicking on it and selecting Rename?
Have you tried booting into the Recovery Partition (command - R on a restart) to see if you can rename the drive using Disk Utility?
I would uninstall Memory Clean. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.
Have you tried booting from your external drive to run Disk Utility? I am guessing you did that, but if not, it would be something else to try.
In my experience, cats are not particularly good at text entry. Perhaps the cat could be assigned to other duties.
Not a problem.
Try running this program in your normal user account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
Does highlighting the name, then hitting the return key allow you to edit the name to remove what is there, and add the desired name?
Sorry for the delay. Life interfered.
Your suggestion didn't work, but: It seems there is likely a physical issue with the drive as Disk Utility can no longer see the internal drive - It could earlier in the failure process. Curiously, it continues to boot and most programs work, but not all. For instance, I can't do any task that requires the system check the disk before proceeding, like installing updates to some programs and upgrading the OS. My guess is this is related to failure of Disk Utility to see the drive. When I boot while holding down the option key, the internal hard drive is similarly absent at the choose-a-disk screen although external disk are there. I'm pretty well stumped and just about at the point of taking it to the local Mac shop and having them evaluate it. It's a long drive to the nearest Apple store.

Thanks for your suggestion, as I hadn't tried booting from USB yet. I can boot from the external usb3 drive. It appears I may be able to repartition the drive and format it. I haven't tried yet as I'm not in a rush as it's my wife's computer and she is visiting family and will be gone a couple more weeks. There isn't much to restore to get her happy if it comes to reformatting but I want to try to get it without that if possible.
Larry
Hello Larry,
I'm sorry, but I don't have an answer for your hard drive question.
I am curious about your EtreCheck report. It is missing huge sections. Can you use the "report a problem" feature and send this report to me?
The drive gave up the ghost last night. Unable to get it to boot again. I reformatted it and reinstalled High Sierra and it seems to be working fine now. Consequently unable to get an EtreCheck report generated with the failing system.
Thanks for your help. Guess we'll have to let this one die a mystery.
Larry
Where are you trying to make the name change?
Is it on the Desktop? Highlight the name and make the change like any file, folder, pic etc.
Yes, the desktop. Highlighting the name and typing the new one results in the displayed error.
I did. Also disk utility. Same results all around. Maybe a command line method is available? As you can already tell I'm not accomplished at Unix under the hood.
It works as expected UNTIL return is hit to commit the change. Then replaces the newly typed-in drive name with the original slashes and displays the error message above.
