Not able to use earthlink.net accounts

Have mail 2.1. Have added gmail account which works. Can not get earthlink accounts to function. Have been in contact with earthlink support and incoming and outgoing server addresses as well as otheri.d.'s are correct. Get server error message that outgoing server not available or responding and to contact provider. OS is Mac OSX 10.4. Have double checked that no commas typed than periods,all spellings correct. earthlink support baffled. Any suggestions?

Have solved my own problem-sort of. Called my cable company Tiime Warner Cable,explained the problem to their Earthlink support person detailing the problems I experienced as well as the dialogues on this post. Was then transferred directly to a Earthlink supervisor. I read off all my settings info and he said they were correct. I then went to Connection Doctor and lo and behold all radio buttons are green. He directed me to send a test message to myself which I received. He can not explain what happened but feels it was an issue
with the Apple mail application since everything was correct on his (Earthlinks) side. I also told him that Earthlink has to update their support page to include OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and Mail 2.1. The support page only tops out with Panther and Mail 1.2 eventhough the setttings are the same. So,if you are a Star Trek fan,blame this on a spatial anomoly! Again, my thanks to all who tried to solve this issue. You are all great people. I will mark this answered.
