How does one access RAW files in Photos when my camera creates JPG and DNG files for each image?

I've got multiple cameras that create a JPG and DNG file but Photos only recognizes the JPG file. I looked up how to access the RAW files, but the only answer I found was that the only way to access the RAW files is to use this iCloud setting that allows you to download originals to your computer, but you don't have the option of keeping originals on your computer without using iCloud? It makes no sense.

enlarge the photo and click edit - in the image window click "use RAW as original" -- this user tip discusses Deleting RAW files from RAW&JPEG pairs in Photos for Mac

My personal choice is to not shoot RAW plus JPEG but to just shoot the format I want rather than having an extra unused copy of the photo stored on my computer

. It doesn't give you the option to use one format unlike the Canon 5D, or other professional cameras, do when one goes through the menu to shoot both JPG and RAW as back-ups.

A work-around to import only one file of you RAW&JPEG pairs would be to import your photos from your camera in two steps:

  • First use Image Capture to import the photos to a folder on your Desktop.
  • Then sort the files in the folder by file type, so you can easily select the RAW files or the JPEG files and drag the file kind you want to the Photos icon in the Dock.

You can than save the files you do not want to import at the moment to an external drive, and keep them, until you know if need them or not.

Thanks Larry. That totally answered my question. I just don't understand why it's such a convoluted work around to get there...

Anyway, I completely agree with using one format or the other, but some cameras (like the Ricoh GR III which I'm referring to) create two files automatically when you make changes in the menu to go from color to b&w or to make adjustments to increase or decrease saturation as a setting. It doesn't give you the option to use one format unlike the Canon 5D, or other professional cameras, do when one goes through the menu to shoot both JPG and RAW as back-ups.
