Old Aperture vault

I have some old aperture vaults which I have used to archive my photos when I was using Aperture around 2012 etc

Now Aperture is long gone, and I dont use it anymore, how do I re-open a vault and move it to say photos or Lightroom ? Is an aperture vault a fully built set of files ? Is hope it is not relying on anything referenced a

I want to be cautious because if I try something which is not proven, I am worried I may ruin the vault and loose all those photos I have kept safely on backup drives... but now I'm not sure what software to use to get back to them,

Thanks

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Which version of MacOS X are you using?

If you purchased Aperture 3 from the AppStore, you may be able to update it to Aperture 3.6 and you can still run it on High Sierra.

You Aperture Vault is a full fledged Aperture library. You can duplicate the vault, and then change the filename extension of the copy of the vault from .apvault to to .aplibrary.

Now you can drag the renamed copy of your vault with the extension .aplibrary onto the Photos icon in the Dock. Photos will create a new Photos Library from your renamed vault and you can browse the restored library this way in Photos for Mac. You should be seeing all projects and albums. Most of the metadata will have been saved, see: How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support
