Apple Watch series 3 non lte over 4G modem

Hello everyone, I am bothered with something I wanna know before going to my retailer and get an Apple Watch 3 gps. Seems like no one can help and give me a Watch to test. Where I live carriers don’t work with esim and having the lte model will be useless. So I try to work around it. I do some cycling from time to time. And I plan to have the following setup. 1/ my iPhone X at home connected to WiFi and or 4g 2/ my Apple Watch 3 gps connected to my 4g modem via WiFi (previously connected my iPhone to that modem) 2.4ghz Question 1/ would it simply connect ? Question 2/ assuming that my carrier supports WiFi calling would the iPhone diverts my cellular phone calls via WiFi through the internet and until my Apple Watch ? Question 3/ assuming my carrier does NOT support WiFi calling, may I be able to receive FaceTime audio on my watch ? I just want to be able to leave my phone at home sometimes and some days but still be available for urgent matters. Thank you for your help Bao

For Apple Watch models without built-in cellular capability the full range of features is available when Apple Watch and the paired iPhone are connected via Bluetooth and your iPhone has access to both cellular service and the Internet (via either cellular data or Wi-Fi).

You do not necessarily need to have your iPhone on or immediately around you (within arm's reach, for example) for the devices to establish and maintain their Bluetooth connection. Normal Bluetooth range is around 33 feet / 10 meters (this will vary in practice due to wireless interference).

Whenever your watch cannot connect to the iPhone via Bluetooth, it will attempt, as a fallback, to connect to a known Wi-Fi network - this being a compatible 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network (some exceptions apply) that your iPhone has connected to before whilst your Apple Watch was connected to the iPhone via Bluetooth.

When instead connected to Wi-Fi, the watch also still offers a number of features, including receiving and sending messages via iMessage. If your carrier offers Wi-Fi Calling and it is supported on your plan and enabled on your iPhone, you can also use Apple Watch to make calls and (subject to carrier support) to send and receive SMS / text messages.

If your Apple Watch is unable to connect either via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, it again still offers some - although fewer - features.

Features that are available in each case are detailed here:

I WAS WRONG and for that I apologise.

Having read your latest post I have just done a test. Forgot my iPhone (turned it off) and went to another waif set up a kilometre away where I usually stop for coffee. My series 3GPS connected immediately to the WiFi and I was able to use Siri, read emails etc. Oh and I turned off my watch too when I was there and it worked the same when turned back on.

so I think you are good to go.

with 50 years of computer experience I nearly always sceptical of claims unless I can check it for myself. Less sceptical with Apple though.

So so this is an interesting problem where I have learned something so I thank you for raising it. Even at my ripe old age I am still a learner.

I just had Apple Store HK (IFC) tried for me, they are amazing... they told me:

iPhone and iwatch on different wifi (networks), iwatch can only see missed called when carrier call on the iPhone.

They dont have wifi calling activated, so when wifi calling is not activated the apple watch (connected to internet) will only show a missed call.

They told me it is sure that when wifi calling is activated, the wifi call will be forwarded to the iwatch even if the iphone is on another network...

this is what I know until now, if I know more I will tell you.

Hi

The functions that are available on Apple Watch when it is away from your iPhone depend on various factors including:

The simple answer is that you cannot link a series 3GPS to WiFi when you do not have your iPhone with you.

>> yes you can apparently if you have previously connected to iPhone to that WiFi network. WiFi credentials will be synced to the watch.

The watch only connects to the same WiFi as the iPhone and it can do that when the phone is off.

>> Untrue. The phone is recommended to stay on in order to sync and transfer data through internet with the watch when the iPhone is unreachable by Bluetooth

i believe you could take your phone with you and leave the watch at home and that would work but that would be silly.

>>> no point here.

I think you are wrong.

The watch can definitely connect to your WiFi when the phone is off. I do it every day.

As to the first point you may be able to go to for instance a Starbucks and connect both your phone and watch to their WiFi, return the following day with no phone and maybe connect BUT you will be on a different network and will gain nothing. The watch will probably revert to your home WiFi as soon as you return.

I believe the WiFi connection between watch and phone is within your local network and other than information held in the cloud and using Siri does not go through the internet.

As I said before you cannot do what you want to do. Why leave your phone at home?

I don’t know if I am wrong. That is why we discuss here :) I just see nowhere it is mentioned that we need to be in a local area for the WiFi to work.

iMessage synced through internet not local area.

The lte version works the same way. Except that you can be outside your home network. It is just connected to the internet through the turned on iPhone

The whole idea here is: would an internet connection be sufficient to keep the functionalities. So basically if you leave you phone at home and go Starbucks. The watch will connect and if it does, are the phone calls diverted as well as iMessage etc ...

Thanks for your help )

I have read it all 10 times but these general information does not give me sufficient information to buy the watch that cost over 500$ gps model in Vietnam without any chance to return it if it does not work the way I asked in my previous post. Staffs also here are not able to reply to my questions and most of them don’t even know that the watch has WiFi. I hope the community would be able to help me more precisely. Thank you

ok I will rephrase my question in a simpler manner.

I go to my mum's house, I forget my iphone at MY home.

my iwatch is connected to my mum wifi as I already visited that place and previously connected to wifi.

With my phone at my home and my iwatch on my wrist at my mum's, will my watch still be connected to my iphone (at home and connected to the internet)

🙂

OK so I have ordered one, delivery should happen soon. If it works I will write a mini report to help the people who are in countries where esims are not supported! because in Vietnam there is free wifi everywhere and if it allows people to remain available via their Apple watch then I think it is a plus I guess. Will keep you posted.
