using Time Machine with Time Capsule in Extended Wireless network mode

I have my 2tb time capsule set up to extend the wireless network from my ISP provided modem/router (that are in a different room than my time capsule). It appears to be working.

I now want to backup my mac book pro to the time capsule over the wireless network, but Time Machine on the mac book pro can't find the Capsule?

What am I missing?

Bottom line, I'd like to have my time capsule on the same wireless network.

Unless you have an older "flat" or "square" version of the Time Capsule......AND.....you have access to an older 5.x version of AirPort Utility, the Time Capsule is not going to be able to connect to your ISP router using only a wireless connection.

The Time Capsule can connect using wireless and "extend" the wireless network as well.....IF.....your "main" router is another Apple AirPort router......an AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, or another AirPort Time Capsule.

Another way to say the same thing.....Apple uses proprietary settings for their "extend" function, which is designed to only work with other Apple routers. This setting will not work with a third-party router.

Can you clarify on exactly what you want to do?

More than likely, unless we have misunderstood the information in your post, you are going to need to plan to connect the Time Capsule to your router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.

Is the connection between the Time Capsule (TC) and the ISP-provided modem/router a wired or wireless one? If wireless, then the TC is not actually extending the ISP's device, and potentially why you are having an issue with Time Machine being unable to locate the TC.

If I was able to physically connect the two devices, would my time capsule be available over the ISP router wireless for backup?

In theory, yes. Whether or not things will work the way that you want is open to question though, since Apple expects you to use the Time Capsule wireless for backups.

Apple will not officially support this type of setup if you have problems, but if it works OK for you, then you might not really care that Apple will frown on your setup.

The only way to really know whether things will work over your ISP wireless network is to try them out.

Please keep in mind that the Time Capsule must be permanently connected to your ISP router using an Ethernet cable, no matter whether you find that the ISP wireless will work for backups......or.....you find that you must use the Time Capsule wireless for backups.

Thanks guys.

What I'm trying to do:

allow time machine on multiple macbooks to wirelessly backup to time capsule.

Limitations:

ISP modem/router is my primary and cannot physically be connected to Time Capsule.

I know I could just create a standalone wireless network that everyone would need to connect to once in a while to have it backup to the time capsule, but I was hoping to avoid that by having the time capsule 'available' via the ISP modem/router wireless network.

Thanks,
